My great Granmothers brother did a lot of research on the Kantymir line and discovered they were royalty in Moldavia. The spelling was different then in the 1600's it was Cantemir. There's info in the Ecyclopedia Brittanica on the family. Prince Constantine ruled then his son Domitri. When the war with the Turks broke out Constantine and his family escaped to Russia and he was known to have a strong ally in the Czar of Russia. There was 100 years of Cantemir family history lost due to war but there may be some out there online or in Russia. I have been told the Kantymir family name is well respected in Greece and had family relative get treated like royalty on a trip there.

Can someone fill me in some more on this ??

Dimitri, son of Constantin was in exile 1688-1710 in Constantinople (now Istanbul) before was again voivode of Moldavia for one year. Dimitri escaped after 1711 to Russia.

Constantin Cantemir - Moldavian Voivode (Prince) between June 25, 1685 and March 27, 1693.:

his son Antioh Cantemir(d. 1726, Golia Monastery:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antioh_Cantemir
his son Dimitrie Cantemir - 1673 – 1723:
"Born in Silişteni (renamed Dimitrie Cantemir and now located in Vaslui County, Romania), Dimitrie was the son of Moldavian Voivode Constantin Cantemir (and brother to Antioh Cantemir, himself Prince), of the low-ranking boyar Cantemireşti family. His mother, Ana Bantăş, was a learned woman of noble origins. Cantemir never forgot his paternal ancestry, but while in Constantinople because of his name similarity locals inspired him to claim descent from Khan Temir, an early 17th century khan of the Budjak Tatars – see Moldavian Magnate Wars' on some occasions'.....during his stay in Constantinople, he also served as a hostage in order to vouch for the loyalty of his father to the Ottomans. he served as a mediator for Ottoman educated to European culture. He was friend with the Grand Vizier and writer Mehmed Pasha Rami. In 1710 he returned to Moldova as voivode." (some parts of german Wikipedia)

Hi,
I have some information you about the Cantemir family.Prince Antiochus Cantemir who was living at the time in Constantinople, was arrested by the Turks and exiled with his family in the small island of Coutali, in revenge for his brother's Dimitri Cantemir( with the help of Peter the Great) war against them.Antiochus was married to a Greek lady named katerina Voda and they had 6 children. He died in Constantinople in 1726. Two of his children had high ranks in the Russian army. During the war of Greek independance in 1821, his great grandson John Cantemir returned secretly in Constantinople and for fear for his life changed his name to Dacoglu. Dac from his hometown Dacia in Romania and oglu in Turkish means son, all together Dacoglu( son of Dacia). With his new name got married and that is our family tree. His children moved later to Greece, some of then now living in England and some of us in America. I'm writing a complete family book , our Greek odyssey ,starting from Tudor Cantemir our ancestor, up until today.
