I'd like to document the early Frith families in Virginia as completely & accurately as possible. We have a bunch of names & events, but it's not always clear how the names connect with each other. We need better info than that provided in some online family trees which say, for example, that Thomas Joseph Frith born 1765 was son of Joseph Frith who died 1740 and was born 1670. This misinformation is, let's just say, not convincing and not helpful.

If you have documentation regarding early Friths in VA (born before ~1800), please let me know (you can reply to me here or offline) and I will put it online in a form that will be useful to everyone interested. I’m looking for wills, deeds, witnessings, christenings, Bible records, gravestone inscriptions, anything. If you even just have families listed who aren't well documented, but that you still have good reason to believe are accurate, please let me know.

(And really, I'm looking for this info for all Friths everywhere, not just VA. I eventually want to repeat this process for every region that has a population of Friths. See
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr... )

Here are some of the early Frith families in VA that I know about, and would like help connecting together. There are probably others I don't know about. If you can add to what I have, or know of other families in VA before ~1800, please mention them in a followup post or offline.
[open the link, then click on the names to see more detail about each]

One of the clearest ways to prove (or disprove) whether different families are actually connected is by DNA testing. There are MANY examples of DNA results showing an accepted family tree to be incorrect, and this leads to finding the CORRECT ancestors. There are even more instances where family trees built on paper documentation were confirmed by DNA testing. I administer a project coordinating this effort for Frith, Firth & Thrift surnames. If you are (or know of) a Frith male who would consider a DNA test, please contact me. See

I see that the following records exist but I don't have the details; can anyone provide the actual details? Can you provide transcriptions or scans of the wills, etc? Can you tell me which family each of these items belongs to?

Joseph Frith held land in York Co 1704 -was this 50 acres, or 50 pounds rent? Which family is he connected to (convincingly)?

After 1715 Joseph Frith married Anne who was previously married (before 1696) to Robert Goodwin. see
http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/va/schools/wmm...
Anne had a son, Martin Goodwin, who mentioned Anne in his will. What did he say?
Can anyone establish whether or not this couple were the Joseph & Anne who were parents of Crosia Frith Cobbs and her siblings? It has been suggested (based on the claimed but undocumented birth & marriage dates) that this was a second marriage for both Joseph and Anne, and that Crosia (assuming she was daughter of THIS Joseph & Anne) was daughter from a first marriage of either Joseph or Anne, and was not biological daughter of the two of them. Is there evidence for or against this suggestion?

I think I remember seeing that there was a court case (murder?) involving Joseph Frith (apparently the father of Crosia Frith Cobbs), but I have lost the details. He may have been a witness but I think he was named as a juror.

Did Crosia's brother John F. Frith have descendants?

HENRICO COUNTY INDEX TO WILLS AND ADMINISTRATIONS, 1655-1800 The Library of Virginia Will: Frith, Anne 1740
[This is Crosia's mother. What did the will say?]

http://www.genforum.genealogy.com/cobb/messages/7429.html
Crosia's parents, Joseph and Ann Frith, witnessed the LWT of Robert?s father Ambrose in York County in 1718 (above). In 1742, Robert was the executor of the LWT of Ann Frith, Crosia?s mother, and he was specifically named as her son-in-law in that document.

Some WILLS from the Burned Counties of Virginia, and Other WILLS Not Listed In Virginia WILLS and Administrations, 1632 - 1800". William Lindsey Hopkins. Richmond. 1987. Pg 60. Ann Frith, will dated 1740, HENRICO COUNTY.
Other references to her Will:
"HENRICO COUNTY Order Book, 1737 - 1746"
"HENRICO COUNTY WILLS, 1737 - 1781"
In April 1740, he (Robert) was named the Executor of the Last Will and Testament of Ann Frith, of Dale Parish in HENRICO COUNTY. In this Will, he was specifically identified as the son-in-law of Ann Frith. It is noted from the Will that he also received the most substantial part of Ann's estate, despite the fact that a son John F. Frith was also named. John received 200 acres on the south side of the "second branch" including the plantation where he lived, along with the family bible. A daughter Rebecca Eddings received one shilling. Robert Cobbs received 200 acres on the north side of the "second branch" in addition to the plantation where he lived with all its adjoining lands, and "all the rest of my estate". Witnesses were George Hastenes, Danell Brown, and Mary Cobbs.
#3 ? Robert Cobb signed his LWT in Halifax Co, VA on June 30, 1768. It was proved on January 19, 1769. His wife Crosia was not named, therefore it is assumed she was already deceased. Robert did name five daughters, to wit: Ann Crumphill ... Elizabeth Cobb ... Sarah Cobb ... Mollie Anderson ... and Judith who was apparently already deceased, as Robert referred to her two children.
The daughters that were married were listed under their married name. Therefore, we can deduce that Elizabeth and Sarah were yet unmarried ... in 1768.
[This author has declined to send me transcriptions of these wills, does anyone have them?]

Is there documentation on Friths in the Revolutionary War? ...must be...

________________________

The following are some other records I have found that may be useful

Crosia Frith's husband, Robert Cobbs:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cobb/amb/d...
* BIRTH: 1687, York County, Virginia (Bruton Parish)
* IMMIGRATION: ABT 1730, HENRICO COUNTY, Virginia
* EVENT: Moved: 1748, Lunenburg County, Virginia [4955]
* WILL: 30 Jun 1768, Halifax County, Virginia [4954]
* DEATH: BET Jun 1768 AND 19 Jan 1769, Halifax County, Virginia (Hunting Creek) [4953]
... He is named in his father's Will in which he was bequeathed the home plantation, two slaves, and lots numbers 43-44 in Williamsburg. Robert sold these lots with the buildings on them on December 10, 1725, to John Blair, merchant. Robert's first three children were born in Williamsburg, before moving to HENRICO COUNTY, about 1730. His son, Oather, was his first child born in Bristol Parish, HENRICO COUNTY.
...On July 25, 1749, Robert purchased 395 acres of land on the Staunton River, in Lunenburg County, Virginia, from a Robert Williams. This land was bequeathed to Robert's son, Samuel. In 1756, Robert bought 400 more acres in Lunenburg County, on the branches of Hunting Creek and Hunt's Branch. This 400 acres Robert sold to his son, Ambrose, in July 1761. By then, due to political reorganizations, this land was located in Halifax County, Virginia.
It is learned from Carrington's HISTORY OF Halifax County that a Robert Cobbs, Gentleman, was appointed Captain of a Company of Foot Soldiers in 1754, by the Honourable Governor, in the southern district of Lunenburg County. (This was the district that became part of Halifax County, in 1752.)
[4953] This was the interim period between the making of his will and the date it was proved.
[4954] In his Will, Robert named his children Ambrose, Sarah, Ann Crumphill, Elizabeth, Molle, Judith, and several other family members. Witnesses were Lot Martin Dickerson, James Cobbs, and Barbary Cobbs,
[4955] This is evidenced by the fact he was listed that year on the Titheables Roll for Lunenburg County.

Can you help me document the early Frith families in Virginia? which of the following items pertains to which individual in which known family? (see my previous post)

The following are some of the Frith notes extracted from Tress Pittenger, A History Of My Thrift Ancestors
http://www.vagenweb.org/shenandoah/thrifttressms.html
[I excluded most items referring to Thrifts]

Often he uses the LDS International Genealogical Index (IGI) as his source.
CAUTION -Any item from IGI, and any item for which no source is listed, is UNRELIABLE. Such info is only for use as a starting point, until it can actually be CONFIRMED.
If you have any corrections or additions, or a better source for any of these, please let me know (a few are documented in my previous post).

In 1607 Captain John Smith made a list of the settlers at Jamestown Island including under the heading "Gentlemen", Richard Frith [Peter Wilson Cobham - The Complete Book of Emigrants 1(;07-1 @ p2.] In 1635 Robert Frith, age 23, came to Jamestown from London, England on the ship Assurance, and a week later Thomas Frith, age 17, came on the ship Elizabeth [Peter Wilson Cobham - The Complete Book of Emigrants 1(;07-1 @ p.166; p160.].
...
There are records of several Nathaniel Friths living in Virginia prior to 1677, all who married Elizabeths. The first, whom I shall designate as Nathaniel I, was born about 1598 and his wife Elizabeth, was born about 1602 [Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) International Genealogical Index (IGI) for Virginia.]. As Virginia was not colonized until 1607 their place of birth had to be England. I have no record of their coming to America, although the timing is such that Nathaniel I could have been the son of Richard who was with John Smith's company and he married a daughter of another member of that Company.

The next is Nathaniel born in Virginia in 1620 and an Elizabeth, spouse of Nathaniel Frith, born in Virginia 1625, whom he married in 1645 [Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) International Genealogical Index (IGI) for Virginia], (I will call him Nathaniel II, who may have been the son of Nathaniel I as the age difference is about right. However, the records show that a Nathaniel Frith married in 1623 but not to whom [Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) International Genealogical Index (IGI) for Virginia] and there is no evidence that this was Nathaniel I.

Nathaniel Frith II died in 1677 as his will made 3 January 1676/7 was proved 4 July 1677 [Wm. Montgomery Sweeney, Wills of Rappahancork County Virginia 1656- 1692 p.32]. In it he leaves his property to his wife Elizabeth and his two sons Nathaniel, born 1646 (whom I will call Nathaniel III) and William, born 1648 [LDS IGI Virginia] He also leaves a cow to his God-daughter Rebecca Williams, daughter of Jane Williams. I have a record of the birth of Joane (probably Jane) Frith to Nathaniel Thrift in 1630 and the marriage of Joane Frith to Roger Williams in 1670 [LDS IGI Virginia] Thus I believe she was Nathaniel II's sister and Rebecca Williams, his niece.

I have found no further records of the son William or any other children of Nathaniel II. As surmised above the William Thrift born to Nathaniel and Elizabeth Thrift in 1675 was probably the son of Nathaniel III. If Nathaniel II were born in 1620 and Elizabeth in 1625, they married in 1645, and Nathaniel III was born shortly thereafter, then if Nathaniel IV was born about 1669 and William in 1675, Nathaniel III would have been in his early 20s when Nathaniel IV was born and late 20s when William was born.

Thus I believe that the Elizabeth Thrift who married William Davis was the widow of Nathaniel III who died shortly after William was born and that my ancestor Nathaniel Thrift was her son.
...
I found other Frith/Thrifts in Virginia in this time period whom I cannot tie into what record I have. A Nathaniel Thrift was born about 1664 in Old Rappahanock County whose spouse was named Rebecca and there was a John Frith who married Anne about 1689, no county designated [LDS IGI Virginia] The latter had a son John born about 1715, a daughter Rebecca born about 1717 and a daughter Mary born about 1719, all born in Henrico County [LDS IGI Virginia]. I suspect the accuracy of the marriage date if the dates of birth are correct. John Jr. married Martha about 1740 and their children were William c.1764, Ann c.1766, Drury c.l768 who married Polly Martin 20 March 1798, Henry c.l770, Sally c.l772, and John c.1774 [LDS IGI
