I'd like to document the early
Frith families in
Virginia as completely & accurately as possible. We have a bunch of names & events, but it's not always clear how the names connect with each other. We need better info than that provided in some online family trees which say, for example, that Thomas Joseph
Frith born 1765 was son of Joseph
Frith who died 1740 and was born 1670. This misinformation is, let's just say, not convincing and not helpful.
If you have documentation regarding early Friths in VA (born before ~1800), please let me know (you can reply to me here or offline) and I will put it online in a form that will be useful to everyone interested. I’m looking for wills, deeds, witnessings, christenings, Bible records, gravestone inscriptions, anything. If you even just have families listed who aren't well documented, but that you still have good reason to believe are accurate, please let me know.
(And really, I'm looking for this info for all Friths everywhere, not just VA. I eventually want to repeat this process for every region that has a population of Friths. See
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr... )
Here are some of the early
Frith families in VA that I know about, and would like help connecting together. There are probably others I don't know about. If you can add to what I have, or know of other families in VA before ~1800, please mention them in a followup post or offline.
[open the link, then click on the names to see more detail about each]

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...One of the clearest ways to prove (or disprove) whether different families are actually connected is by DNA testing. There are MANY examples of DNA results showing an accepted family tree to be incorrect, and this leads to finding the CORRECT ancestors. There are even more instances where family trees built on paper documentation were confirmed by DNA testing. I administer a project coordinating this effort for
Frith, Firth &
Thrift surnames. If you are (or know of) a
Frith male who would consider a DNA test, please contact me. See
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Thrift-Frith-Firth/I see that the following records exist but I don't have the details; can anyone provide the actual details? Can you provide transcriptions or scans of the wills, etc? Can you tell me which family each of these items belongs to?
Joseph
Frith held land in York Co 1704 -was this 50 acres, or 50 pounds rent? Which family is he connected to (convincingly)?
After 1715 Joseph
Frith married Anne who was previously married (before 1696) to Robert
Goodwin. see
http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/va/schools/wmm...Anne had a son, Martin
Goodwin, who mentioned Anne in his will. What did he say?
Can anyone establish whether or not this couple were the Joseph & Anne who were parents of Crosia
Frith Cobbs and her siblings? It has been suggested (based on the claimed but undocumented birth & marriage dates) that this was a second marriage for both Joseph and Anne, and that Crosia (assuming she was daughter of THIS Joseph & Anne) was daughter from a first marriage of either Joseph or Anne, and was not biological daughter of the two of them. Is there evidence for or against this suggestion?
I think I remember seeing that there was a court case (murder?) involving Joseph
Frith (apparently the father of Crosia
Frith Cobbs), but I have lost the details. He may have been a witness but I think he was named as a juror.
Did Crosia's brother John F. Frith have descendants?

In April 1740, he (Robert) was named the Executor of the Last Will and Testament of Ann
Frith, of Dale Parish in
HENRICO COUNTY. In this Will, he was specifically identified as the son-in-law of Ann
Frith. It is noted from the Will that he also received the most substantial part of Ann's estate, despite the fact that a son John F. Frith was also named. John received 200 acres on the south side of the "second branch" including the plantation where he lived, along with the family bible. A daughter Rebecca Eddings received one shilling. Robert
Cobbs received 200 acres on the north side of the "second branch" in addition to the plantation where he lived with all its adjoining lands, and "all the rest of my estate". Witnesses were George Hastenes, Danell Brown, and Mary
Cobbs.
#3 ? Robert
Cobb signed his LWT in Halifax Co, VA on June 30, 1768. It was proved on January 19, 1769. His wife Crosia was not named, therefore it is assumed she was already deceased. Robert did name five daughters, to wit: Ann Crumphill ... Elizabeth
Cobb ... Sarah
Cobb ... Mollie Anderson ... and Judith who was apparently already deceased, as Robert referred to her two children.
The daughters that were married were listed under their married name. Therefore, we can deduce that Elizabeth and Sarah were yet unmarried ... in 1768.
[This author has declined to send me transcriptions of these wills, does anyone have them?]
Is there documentation on Friths in the Revolutionary War? ...must be...

The following are some other records I have found that may be useful
Crosia Frith's husband, Robert Cobbs:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cobb/amb/d... * BIRTH: 1687,
York County,
Virginia (Bruton Parish)
* IMMIGRATION: ABT 1730,

* WILL: 30 Jun 1768,
Halifax County,
Virginia [4954]
* DEATH: BET Jun 1768 AND 19 Jan 1769,
Halifax County,
Virginia (Hunting
Creek) [4953]
... He is named in his father's Will in which he was bequeathed the home plantation, two slaves, and lots numbers 43-44 in Williamsburg. Robert sold these lots with the buildings on them on December 10, 1725, to John Blair, merchant. Robert's first three children were born in Williamsburg, before moving to
HENRICO COUNTY, about 1730. His son, Oather, was his first child born in Bristol Parish,
HENRICO COUNTY.
...On July 25, 1749, Robert purchased 395 acres of land on the Staunton River, in
Lunenburg County,
Virginia, from a Robert Williams. This land was bequeathed to Robert's son, Samuel. In 1756, Robert bought 400 more acres in
Lunenburg County, on the branches of Hunting
Creek and Hunt's Branch. This 400 acres Robert sold to his son, Ambrose, in July 1761. By then, due to political reorganizations, this land was located in
Halifax County,
Virginia.
It is learned from Carrington's HISTORY OF
Halifax County that a Robert
Cobbs, Gentleman, was appointed Captain of a Company of Foot Soldiers in 1754, by the Honourable Governor, in the southern district of
Lunenburg County. (This was the district that became part of
Halifax County, in 1752.)
[4953] This was the interim period between the making of his will and the date it was proved.
[4954] In his Will, Robert named his children Ambrose, Sarah, Ann Crumphill, Elizabeth, Molle, Judith, and several other family members. Witnesses were Lot Martin Dickerson, James
Cobbs, and Barbary
Cobbs,
[4955] This is evidenced by the fact he was listed that year on the Titheables Roll for
Lunenburg County.
