Would like to get information on two Catholic Orphanages located in Philadelpha, PA:
St. John's for boys and
St. Joseph's for Boys
Do they still exist?

Yes, there was a St. John's orphanage asylum; I believe it was located across from Mother of Sorrow church; the church is/was located at 1030 N. 48th St, Philidelphia, Pa. St. John's may have been located on Wyalusing St - which is near N. 48th St. I don't know when it opened or closed; I am still trying to find out more myself; records from orphanges that closed usually went to one of the local churches; I have seen the name for St Joseph's but have no other info at this time;Hope this helps;

Thank you for posting a reply. As a young child I was in St. John's. I have thought many times of the good and not so good time there. Nothing to do with being sexually molested. I was always treated very kindly. I saw a web site a couple days ago from twins who were in Saint John's about the same time I was. I need to find it again and contact them to see what I can find. When I locate them again, would you like to know the web site?

I would like the web site address if you find it; I am searching for more info because my grandfather - Charles J. Cummings was there. He was there sometime in the 1900; I found him on the 1910 census; I'm not sure how old he was or when he went in or why; do you know when it closed?
If I find any more info, I will let you know.

My brother and I were in St. John's Orphanage Asylum from 1954 to 1959, located at 49th and Wyalusing Ave. Philadelphia, Pa. What information are you looking for?

I am trying to trace my two uncles, James Joseph Flynn Jr. and Edward Flynn. They are both deceased. James Jr. died in WW II and Edward died at St Joseph's Orphanage in 1939 of kidney failure (we believe) Edward was a triplet (my Mother being one of them) and James was their older brother by 3 years. Their Mother died soon after giving birth to the triplets and they were put into separate orphanages. James in St John, Edward in St Joseph, my Mother in St Vincent's. The triplet sister (Katherine) died shortly after birth
I can't find any birth records for any of them or death records for my Grandmother (Mary Finnegan Flynn), Katherine Flynn (who I believe died in a hospital, but don't know which one) and Edward Flynn. We have notification from the US Government that James Jr was lost at sea, but can not find a birth record for him.
I just don't know where to turn to try and find information about them.
I was told that most of the Orphanages destroyed records if the child was not adopted. No one was.
Can you tell me where to search? We don't even know where any of them are buried.
We lost our Mother recently and have been trying to put together the pieces of stories she told us growing up.
