no, then again, i don't know a word of latin, maybe it was the familie's motto in the book, but i have since gave it to a freind, who has a freind by the name of micheal ironside. (i told him to send it to him).
one thing in the book, that i forgot to mention: there was a line of the family whose history was lost to the writer, i think he called it the dover line. the guy i sent the book to hailed from canada, tis possible that he is of that line.----are you british? or canadian? or otherwise? have you any canadian relations?

Many thanks for passing that book on to a possible relative. You see,being an Ironside(my mother's maiden name) I too have one of those books (currently mislaid...buried deep in years of accumulation!). From memory it has a dark blue hard cover, into which is imprinted an emblem consisting of a cross, with crosslets, over which is enscribed the words "IN HOC SIGNO VINCES" ..... roughly meaning "Beneath This Cross I Conquor".
I vaguely remember this to have been reputed to be King Alfred's motto.
Yes, I am British, and live in "Wessex" ....Alfred's territory! ... not far from Winchester, and Chippenham, both of which were Alfred's strongholds.
Don't know of a "Dover" line, but apparantly there was some emigration to Canada from the Scottish line.

Yes, there was immigration to Canada. My great grandfather, William John Ironside (b. 1875, Tarves) and his wife, Margaret Mearns Robb, immigrated to Canada about 1912. William's sister, Jessie Ann Park Ironside and brother, George Clubb Ironside, also came to Canada. Their parents were John Wilson Ironside and Jessie Adie.

I too have a copy of the book.

Hi there; Just read your post about the family tree in the book dating back to 802. I'm interested in the scot's line from William 1776 - 1843. I have traced our Ironside line -through my dad's line back to a William Ironside (born in that general time frame) who married Isabel Tocher, and the family is based around Arbroath, Dundee, Forfar and a place named Drumdollo. The were an abundance of blacksmiths and ironworkers in their occupations, as well as crofters, weavers and tailors. I have hit the proverbial brick wall with this William, and being in Canada, haven't got the resources to go any further to search for him. Would you be able to tell me if there's any further info in the book on that particular William. I don't recognize the names in your line that came to Canada, but I'd be interested in whether we have any cousins in common. Thanks for your time.... Mina (Ironside) McGean

My great grandfather was a blacksmith from Tarves/Fyvie/Methlick, Aberdeenshire. I have been able to go back to James Ironside b. abt. 1749 m. to Helen Gray. I believe our familly is some kind of descendant of Edgar (The Aethling) as the book states... Edgar retired to Buchan in Scotland at a place called Ironside in the parish of New Deer, near Peterhead, where the Ironside Family has been ever since.

Unfortunately, the book does not have much on the main Ironside line. There is a gap between Edgar (d. 1093-1100) and John (b. 1666). Then:

Hi Karen, what book are you refering to? Is it the family tree compiled by Ernest Thomas Ironside(no 12 Dorset line)about 60 years ago? If so, I also have a copy from my father; it has a blue cover with the Ironside crest on, a cross with crosslets and the motto 'In hoc signo vinces'. Would like to hear from you.

Yes. That is the book. Unfortunately, it didn't help me much in my search. I have been able to go back to James Ironside b. 1749, Darnabo, Fyvie, Aberdeen.
