Can anyone tell me how to find my husband's family from Bergen, Norway? We have been looking for several years now and keep hitting a brick wall. Here is what I have.
Knudt Selvold married Sureborg Aaslakson sometime in the mid 1840s. Children born
Ole Knudtsen 12/05/1847 Mikletund (Miktelund, Mykland) Norway.
At one time we had the address or farm name of #7 but now sure that is even correct.
any help you can give would be great.

Also looking for other names.

Andreas (anders) Larsen 1810-1900
Karnelske (Carnelche) Parnele Nelson(Nielsen)

Thanks so much.

Today both Mykletun (old spelling Micheltun, Mikletun etc.) and Sellevold farms are in Lindås parish, about 30 minutes north of Bergen, the farms are only a few miles apart.

If you have a good map of Norway, the closest township today is Alversund.

Knut Olsen (i.e.son of Ole) was confirmed on May 8th 1823, he was born Nov. 28th 1807 at Sellevold farm, son of Ole Andersen (son of Anders) Sellevold and Kari Johnsdtr. (daughter of John), they were married 28 Jun 1807 in Hamre parish.

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Ole was from a farm called Vaxstaule (don`t know today`s name for that farm), Kari from Hilland. It was the first marriage for both.

Here is Kari in the 1801-census Joen is the old spelling for Jon/John. The first two people are her parents, John and Martha, siblings Anders, Martha, Synneve:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Joen and Martha were married March 27th 1785, he was from Sellevold, she was from Soltvedt:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

---------

Ole and Kari`s son: Knud Olsen was married to Ingeborg Askildsdtr. (not Sureborg - which must be a misspelling as it isn`t a Norwegian name) 26 Dec 1842 in Hosanger parish.

They also had the daughter Karen Maria Knutsdtr. (daughter of Knut) she was born May 18th 1849 at Mykletun and christened May 20th in Hosanger parish (the records I have access to start in 1849, so I haven`t been able to find Ole).
Then they had:
Daughter Ragnelle b. 25 Feb 1853, chr. 13 Mar 1853
Son Ananias b. 01 Jan 1855, chr. 17 May 1855
Son Knud b. 17 Jan 1857, chr. 15 Mar 1857
All in what was then Hosanger parish.

When Karen had her confirmation in 1864, she was a maid at Nedre Tvedt (lower Tvedt farm) close to Alversund.

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

She is also found there in 1865-census:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Same census you find Ananias as a fosterchild at the Bøgevold farm, indicating that his parents are either dead, or poor:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

And Rangela/Ragnhild as a fosterchild at the Næse farm, says here she is placed there by the welfare service for the poor:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Knut/Knud is a fosterchild at the Ly farm:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

My guess is that their father is dead, because I think this may be Ingeborg/Ingebjørg (different spelling, same name, it was spelled -bjørg when Knut was christened for example, -borg when the others were christened):

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Says she is a widow on welfare, in her 49th year, meaning she was probably born 1807.

I am not sure I have found Ole, but this is a good candidate:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Næse/Nesse is the farmname where his sister Ragnhild is living, maybe he was a fosterchild there too, untill he went to earn some money? The woman in the family he is living with, may be Kari`s sister Brite...

What you need are deathrecords for the Hosanger parish, I don`t have access to them, and also christeningrecords for before 1849... But this should give you a jumpstart?

Good luck!

Heidi

Just glad I could help!

I also found out which farm Vaxtaule is - it is an old spelling for Vågstaule, on the Radøy island, just north of Alversund. Closest township is Manger, Ole Andersen was called Vågstøl (I think støl and staul are variations of the same word, støl means the little "farm" where they took their herd to grace in the summer) when he married Kari Joensdtr. Hilland. He was the son of Anders Pettersen and Marta Olsdtr. Vågstaule and was christended Feb 13th 1781:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Here he is with parents and seven siblings in the 1801-census:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

His father was from Askeland, his mother from Vågstaule, here is their engagement on May 9th 1773:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

And here is their wedding:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

As you can see the Vågstaule farm has had MANY spellings through the years from Wax Tiold, Vaktskjold, to Vaxstaule, Waagstoule etc...

Ole had these siblings:
Brite b. 1776
Christi b. 1779
Petter b. 1783
Knud b. 1784
Rangele b. 1786
Anne b. 1789
Mons b. 1792
Ane Marie b. 1793

Anders Pettersen was 90 years old when he died Aug 4th 1832:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Martha Olsdtr. was 86 when she died March 3rd 1838:

Thank you so much for all the information you have been kind enough to share with me. I didn;t have any information at all on this part of the family.

My mother who is 83 is so excited about all of this.

I am not sure if you know the kindness you have shown by giving me this.THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS
.

Happy to help! :-)

I know how frustrating it is to hit brick walls! Helping eachother is the only way we can get on with our search for relatives, isn`t it! Next time maybe you will be able to help someone else, and maybe that someone can help yet another in return.

In my case I live in Norway and thus know the language and the sources quite well - that makes it easier to find ancestry here!

But again - just glad I could help!

Hi, Can you tell me if the farm Mellingen in Radoy is part of Manger? If not what is it part of or where can I look for it in the census links for norway? I am looking for information on Berthe Gurine Gunderson (born 1871) and spouse (Rarlagger? not sure what that means) Olaf Johan Kristiansen (born 1870). They had a son Normann Wabek Kristiansen (born November 25, 1908 and baptized April 1909). Normann came to the USA and is my husbands uncle.
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Bertha Gurina (Halvorsdtr.) Gundersen Mæland was the daughter of Halvor Gundersen Mæland, on 29 Sep 1895, she married Olaf Johan Kristiansen (Kvamme), son of Kristian Johannesen Kvamme, in Mariakirken (the Maria church) in Bergen.

Olaf Johan was born Jan 17th 1870, christened Mar 27th 1870 in Sæbø subparish, Manger. He was first baptized at home by his uncle.
His parents were Krsitian Johannesen and Barbro Olsdtr.:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

His parents were married Nov 7th 1869. Kristian was born at Husebø farm, Barbro at Kvamme. Here is their marriage record:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Here is Kristian living with his brother Rasmus, the brothers family and his and sister Alette at Husebø farm:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Here is Barbro living with her parents Ole and Rangele and siblings:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

Husebø is today in Meland parish (kommune), neighbour kommune to Radøy. While Kvamme is on the Radøy island, just south of Manger.

I believe Bertha was born in Sveio parish, far south of Hordaland county on 06 Jun 1871, and christened: 18 Jun 1871. Her mother was Kari Nielsdtr. (daughter of Nils), her father Halvor mentioned above. The Mæland farm is on the Bømlo island, I believe. Look for Bømlo (with Bremnes subparish) or Finnaas records.

If you want to access more records from the same area, there is a link called "similar area" or "same område" in the top of the pages I sent you links to above. Or here:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebBaseOpp.exe?slag=sam...

The word you had "rarlagger" is probably the occupation "rørlegger" which means plumber.

Good luck in your further search!

In at least one case, the Vågstaule name was changed to Wagtskjold on coming to America. Going from Wakstjold to Vågstaule to Wagtskjold.
Ivar Halvorson Wakstjold had two sons:
Erik Ivarson Skaarnes & Halvor Ivarson Vågstaule,
Erik had two sons:
Ivar Erickson Skaarnes & Harald Skaarnes
Ivar emigrated to America and became Ivar Erickson.
Harald stayed in Norway and had two sons and one daughter
Alf Skaarnes and his sister stayed in Norway, Kaare Skaarnes came to America and married my father's sister.
Halvor Ivarson Vågstaule, had two sons who came to America:
Ivar Wagtskjold and Herman Halvorson.
I was told the Skaarnes was the name of the farm (In Lindaas, #111) and that Vågstaule, or Wagtskjold, was a place name.
I communicate with Ivar Wagtskjold's grandson and that was also his understanding.
Maybe I was misinformed?

My gg grandfather Rognald Olsen Pletten came from this area.
Thanks, Jeff
