Y-DNA testing has shown that a patrilineal descendant of Charles CARRICO of Sullivan Co., IN, is not a genetic match to other tested descendants of Peter CARRICO, 1674 immigrant to Maryland. The inescapable conclusion here is that he has an NPE, a "non-paternal event" (i.e., a hidden adoption or illicit paternity) in his patrilineal line, which is

Charles CARRICO & Martha REASON
_Reason CARRICO & Elizabeth ENGLE
__William G. CARRICO & Susan SMITH
___George Harrison CARRICO & Rachel COX
____William CARRICO & Mabel Gertrude JONES
_____Pvt

This result has possible rammifications for everyone descended from Charles and possibly for the descendants of his brother, Josiah CARRICO, as well. (Their parents are unproven.)

We do not know, at this point, where in the line between Charles and the test subject the NPE took place. The further up his line the NPE occurred, the greater the number of CARRICOs who are affected.

We can determine where the NPE occurred by testing cousins, beginning with a first cousin, descended from a brother of George Harrison, then a second cousin, descended from a brother of William G., then a third cousin, descended from a brother of Reason, then a fourth cousin, descended from Charles's brother, Josiah. Or we can start with a fourth cousin and work down to the test subject. The order of testing the cousins isn't as important as getting them tested.

I am offering to split the cost of a 12-marker test for one of each of these cousins, which means four tests in all. The test subject must be a male surnamed CARRICO and must supply their genealogy in sufficient detail that I'm convinced they are one of the above cousins. Please contact me offlist for further details.

We now have test results from descendants of three sons of Charles CARRICO (1770s-1830s) of Sullivan Co., IN, namely: Reason, Basil, and Josiah. Therefore, my offer to fund DNA tests for Charles's descendants is cancelled.

Of the three tested sons, the descendants of Basil and Josiah are a tight match with other descendants of Peter CARRICO I, the 1674 immigrant to Maryland. It appears only the descendant of Reason CARRICO has an NPE, a "non-paternal event" (i.e., hidden adoption or illicit paternity) in his patrilineal line.

We do not yet know where in his patrilineal line the NPE took place. If you are a descendant of Reason CARRICO (1790s-1878) of Sullivan Co., IN, you have a stake in finding out where in this individual's line the NPE occurred. So, if you are a male surnamed CARRICO descended from Reason on a patrilineal (direct male) line, please get Y-DNA tested, to 1) find out whether you have the NPE and 2) to help determine where this NPE occurred.

If you have any further questions about testing, I'll be happy to answer them privately.
