Mrs. Eva J. Spencer died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lillian Pullen, Monday, Oct. 5, 1903, at 2 o'clock.

Although the deceased has been ailing for some time her many friends were sadly shocked when it was announced Monday afternoon that she had quietly passed away from heart failure, as none expected her disease to prove fatal. Mrs. Spencer was the wife of Lewis Spencer who passed to the beyond several years ago. She leaves two sons, Lewis, Jr., and Arthur, who are successful farmers residing about two miles south of this city, and two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Pullen, wife of Geo. L. Pullen and Daisy, who has long been an assitant in the Bank.

The deceased has been too long known with her many virtues in this city for us to say anything which will be new to her many friends. For ourself we wish to say that she was one of the finest and most genial friends we ever knew, and her kind greetings will be greatly missed by us all who have known her so many long years as a true, devoted friend and kind neighbor, and with her relatives we mourn this sad and great loss to our city.

The funeral will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George L. Pullen, Thursdya afternoon at 1:30 o'clock.

Mrs. Eva Jones Spencer, widow of the late Lewis Spencer, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George L. Pullen, last Monday, October 5, 1903.

Mrs. Spencer was a native of Pennsylvania, but spent the greater part of her life here where she gathered about her a wide circle of friends. Since the death of her husband she has made her home at the Pullen's and has given much of her later years to reading and study and was perhaps best known to the club women with whom she has worked for the past nine years. Among them as with all who knew her she was greatly valued as a counsellor.

The funeral occurred from the house, Thursday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Gilmore of Madison, officiating. In the beautiful tribute he paid to the deceased all present received consolation.

The deceased leaves one son and two daughters, besides a host of friends to regret her death.

SAD. The chocking of little "Bunny" the eldest and only boy of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Spencer, on Monday of last week, resulting in his death Tuesday night, was a severe blow to its doating father and mother, grandparents and friends of the family. The child was at play with some hickory nuts upon the floor while its mother was about her washing, and began to choke. Its mother thought it must have gotten a piece of shell into its throat and took it up and made very effort to recover it but without avail. The child was taken to Dr. Bulson who could succeed no better but prescribed some nausceating medicine, hope to effect relief in that direction. The child was taken home and began growing weaker. In the morning the doctor was called, and viewing the hopelessness of the case, concluded as the only means to save the child's life would be a surgical operation, and Dr. Gaben of Madison was summoned by telegraph to assist in the operation. The child was chloroformed and laid upon a table, but the moment the incision was made in its throat the air rushed in, driving the obstruction down upon its lungs and in a moment the child was dead.

The funeral services were held at the house Thursday, and the hope and pride of fond parents' heart was laid away in cemetery of a cold, bleak December day, never to be forgotten by that young mother and doating father while memory shall last.
