John ("Pickens") Calhoun Black, earlyt-mid 1800s

I would like to hear from descendants of Pickens Black and his wife Mary Latimer b. 1829 in Abbeville South Carolina USA. They had a daughter Mary Katherine Black b. 9 Jul 1856 in Shelby, ? Callahan County, Texas, USA. There seems to be some confusion about John "Pickens" Black as I understand there are two in Abbeville, South Carolina which is where he was born. One went to Texas which is the one I am querying on. However, I also show that he died in 1857 in Logansport, Iowa. There is a Pickens Black who md Ellen Johnson in 1866 in Abbeville, South Carolina -obviously can't be the same one or else dates are wrong. If anyone can clear up any of this information, I would appreciate it. This is a collateral line for me so I only have Latimer files available to share.

It would be of interest to you, i believe, if you'd try the name:

blackville, arkansas to your search. There is a story there on a pickens black.

Good luck!

Saw your message (old -oct 2001) perhaps you have found out this info but I have been working on the "Blacks of Union Co. Ark and do believe your family is connected??

I am unable to answer your question about the story of Pickens William Black.

However, I might be able to shed some light on a pattern of migration. My husband is a Latimer (aka Lattimer) descendant and in doing his research, I found that they often traveled with other families from Anderson and Abbeville District, SC to Hall Co., GA and from there, some of them came to DeKalb Co., AL about 1880-1883. Perhaps your Black line came to AL with them. Maybe you could do some research in these areas to find the answer you seek.

Blackville, Arkansas was reportedly founded by a man by the name of Pickens Black. I find it coincidental that my husband's [father's] had an association w/Pickens Black and had aunt by the name of Missouri Dancler.

My great grandmother was Missouri Black, Pickens William blacks sister. The Danclers lived by my grandparents Missouri's son Theodore Pickens Dothard and his wife Jessie West Dothard. Missouri married my great grandfather Clark Dothard. My great grandmother on that side was Fredonia West and Jessie West, who also lived by the Danclers. They are all on the same census page. King Agrippa Dancler. I had heard before that there was an association with my great uncle Pickens Black, but then found it fascinating that the Danclers lived by my other side of grandparents.Do you have any information or know of any information as to whether the Blacks had any Indian blood. I am being told they were Cherokee Indian and Irish

Nancy Black and all others who contributed to the Black family line,
I am Samuel Black's and Agnes Glenn's 6great grandson. My brother and I are doing genealogical work for the Black family line and were wondering if you have the names of the six children of John Calhoun Black and Mary Latimer. Any other information about the Black family line would also be helpful. Thank you for the info already provided.

John (Pickens)Black, is indeed, the brother to Missouri Black-(Dancler); Missouri Dancler was Aunt to my father-in-law, King Agrippa Dancler, Sr., the son of John Wesley Dancler. They made their home in Arkansas in the vicinity of what is now, Newport, Arkansas.

As I understand it,they lived in the area of Tallapoosa, Alabama
