Erick Olson had a house servant named Julia Peterson living with him in the 1905 census. He was from Norway, and she from Sweden. I am searching for information on my Great Grandmother, Julia Pederson, AKA Julia Pearson. She was supposed to have been born 14 Apr 1887 in Sweden. She said taht she came to the US in 1903 or 1905, taking a train from New York City to Elbow Lake. She said that she was assisted at some point by a Norwegian that spoke English, and that they could understand each other due to the similar languages. I am seeking naturalization records or anything else pertaining to her. She married Andrew Brouse in 1907 in ND.

Since you know her birthdate, 14 Apr 1887
you should post at the Swedish genealogy page and there are some lookups volunteers there who could probably find exactly where in Sweden she emigrated from. There is also a census of 1890 they may check for you, in Sweden. Most of that information is NOT online to search, but it is on CD's that are available, and some of these volunteers have them.

Here is where you should post the same information you posted here:

Hi,

I found the following information on the emigration CD EMIBAS that might be your Julia:

Julia Persdotter, b. 14 APR 1887 in Södra Finnskoga, Värmlands län, Värmland. Emigrated 17 JUN 1904 from Järpliden/Hjerpliden, Södra Finnskoga, Värmlands län, Värmland.
------------------------------------
Persdotter translates to Pers daughter so a son of Per would be called Persson (Pers son). This way of creating last names ended around the time when she emigrated, people started to just use Persson or Johans-son, Anders-son etc.
The women also kept their last name when they were getting married.
------------------------------------
I then took a look at the Swedish online church books http://www.arkivdigital.net/ and found the following

I had to crop the images into one as it became too big to post

You can quite easily find children to your relatives that passed away after 1971 by contacting the Swedish tax authorities http://tinyurl.com/3rn9zr3
You can email them here http://tinyurl.com/4xaza6u using the email address for "Tax Härnösand" since your relatives are from Jämtland. Just give them as much detail as you can in terms of name, birth, place of birth etc and ask them to let you know their childrens data.

After receiving the information above you can then use this site http://tinyurl.com/3s7ewbf (make sure that the "Sök person" (find person) tab is activated. The site holds information about almost all living people in Sweden and it will give you their address if you want to get in contact.

For estate inventories before 1970 you need to contact the regional archives. This site will tell you which regional archive goes with which city http://tinyurl.com/6y8ol4u

The online church books can take you a lot further back

Thank you very much for the work you did. i too found most (not all) of that info that you posted since my original post. I will try to see if I can match my great grandmother with the family you listed. I am aware of teh patronymic naming system as my paternal grandmother was of Norwegian descent, and I have traced them back for hundreds of years. Thanks again for the good deed!

If the Julia from Finnskogen in Värmland left the parish in June 1904, here is a good possibility that she went to the closest port of emigration, which was Oslo. I found a good match for the name, date, but it just says Sweden for her place. The record is from the Norwegian Digital Archives, emigrants from Oslo.

160807 Oslo 6791 1904 Juni 30 Julia Person f u Pige 17 Sverige Minn. 14317 Sverige Prp Oscar Ii

Leaving Oslo, 1904, June 30, Julia Person, female, unmarried, Pige means single girl, or it means a girl who works for a family or farm as a hired hand, age 17, from Sweden, going to Minnesota, On the Oscar line?

Yes, I saw that record, and it is my Julia, she listed her destination as Elbow lake, Minnesota, as our family tradition stated. Thanks again, i was able to trace her family back pretty far already.
