Great grandmother lived in Glogon, Austria-Hungary in late 1800s, died in 1910. Married to Mihaly Matyas (German spelling = Michael Mathias)who died in 1895 possibly during one of the conflicts. They were Roman Catholic. Her name is phoneticllay spelled as Anna Reikovitz, but could also be Rajkovich (?) what is the best site to go to to get more info?

Hi,
Glogon had a population of 2.669 in 1910, with 1745 German and 756 Rumanian inhabitants. I guess they were German-speaking, but census data is necessary.
What conflict you mean in 1895? It is well before WWI, in the "happy peace-time"

reposting as the message I posted was deleted :

RAJKOVIĆ families that lived in this area at the time your ancestor was born were neither German nor Romanian - or Hungarian. They were:

-ethnic Croatian (Šokci) family RAJKOVIĆ that lived in nearby STARČEVO village. They were Roman Catholic:

- ethnic Serbian family RAJKOVIĆ that lived in PANČEVO. They were Eastern Orthodox (Serbian Orthodox):

I thought I read that in my family history GGrandfather and his son were in the Austrio-Hungarian army, and that there was some conflict going on around that time with another country. I learned from another responder that the spelling is Rajkovic and it is Croatian name.

"I learned from another responder that the spelling is Rajkovic and it is Croatian name. "

Original spelling is RAJKOVIĆ.

It was present in that area among ethnic Croats and ethnic Serbs at the time you are researching - labeling it as *Croatian* surname is thus pointless, incorrect and rather ignorant of the facts. :)

If your ancestors RAJKOVIĆ from this area were Roman Catholic they were Croatian.

*Name* or all RAJKOVIĆ families who lived there were not.

att: detailed info on not-Croatian RAJKOVIĆ nobility XVIII century, Vojvodina
