Robert Turner m. Marguerite Brûlé

I am trying to nail down where and when Robert Turner married Marguerite Brûlé, with no luck so far. Their marriage is in the Répertoire alphabétique des mariages des canadiens français 1760-1935 (a.k.a. "Blue Drouin"), but with no place or date.

I had it as 11/25/1824 in Sainte-Ursule (from a correspondent, I think - unfortunately, I lost all my E-mail two months ago due to a computer problem), but the parish at Sainte-Ursule looks like it got started only in 1842!

Here is what I know: Robert's parents, Alexander Turner and Angélique Bélanger, were married 06/22/1807 at Saint-James in Trois-Rivières. Alexander was from Maskinongé, and Angélique from Louiseville. I found the baptisms of four of their children in Saint-Joseph-de-Maskinongé, but not Robert:
- Marguerite 08/13/1808
- Marie 09/11/1816
- Edouard 07/14/1819
- Guillaume 08/02/1820

Wherever Robert and Marguerite were married, they settled in Maskinongé immediately after, as all their children were baptized there, starting with Pierre 09/15/1825 (so the date I have for the marriage, late 1824, fits in perfectly - I just wish that I could substantiate it).

Help, anyone?

Thanks a lot for the lightning quick response! So, if I understand you correctly, Robert Brûlé married twice, first to Peggy Dunn (as I saw her name on the Saint-James microfilm) and then to Marguerite Brûlé.

That makes so much more sense: I had Marguerite Brûlé's husband as the son of Alexander and Angélique Bélanger, but that would have made him very young at the time of his marriage.

Time to re-arrange my family tree!

By the way, I am descended from Marguerite Turner and Régis Paquin.

Thanks again!

By the way, as to Robert Turner's death, you may already know this, but, just in case, he was still alive in April 1851 (present at the marriage of his daughter Amanda), and he died before August 1857 (marriage of Marguerite - you have the wrong year, I checked the microfilm).

Do you know when Robert Turner's first wife Margaret Dunn died. I am researching Margaret Dunn's family in The Maskinonge area prior to 1783. I have alot of info on her siblings but very little on her, except for her marriage record and baptisms of a few children. She was the daughter of Charles Dunn and Rebecca Logie.

I have been unable to find anything out about Marguerite Dunn, including her death, so you know a lot more than I do! All I have is her marriage, and her name on a plaque in Saint-Gabriel-de-Brandon commemorating the founders of the lake Maskinongé Settlement.

I would be interested in the children, though.

Sorry I could not help.

Hi Claire,
I have seen the birth records for 2 of John and Nancy Clark Turner children of Riviere du Loup Maskinonge. Margaret 11/9/1791 and Guilluame 5/25/1793, I believe in the records of William Henry Sorel. On Peggy Dunn's marriage to Robert Turner, John Turner his brother is one of the witnesses.I have not found any birth record for Robert. Where did you find this record? I don't know who his parents were. I was hoping to connect John Turner (married to Nancy Clark) as his brother, because of the marriage record.
Do you know anything about a Margaret Turner married to John England, also from the same area. I was hoping she was John and Robert's sister.
I have Margaret Dunn Turner's death March 3, 1856 in Daillebout, Berthier, and Robert her husband 8/2/1862.
I have no other marriage for this Robert Turner. I have 8 children by this couple.
Are you sure that it is this Robert Turner who married a second time to Marguerite Brule?
My husband's ancestor William Dunn was Margaret Dunn Turner's sister.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Marie

I can confirm the birth of Robert Turner 05/03/1789, baptised the same day in Louiseville, found in "Paroisse Saint-Antoine-de-la-Rivière-du-Loup - Répertoire des naissances/baptêmes 1714 à 1993". This is confirmed by the 1851 Census, where he was 61 years old, in Sainte-Ursule, Maskinogé, and by the record of his burial, 07/13/1852 (died 2 days before), at Protestant Episcopal Congregation, Rivière-du-Loup, Maskinongé.

I am puzzled by your reference to Margaret Dunn's death in 1856. What is your source? Daillebout sounds more like a notary's name than a place.

I have found the baptisms of twelve children for Robert Turner and Marguerite Brûlé at Maskinongé between 1825 and 1842.

I believe he was born 5/3/1789. I have his marriage record and it states that he was 19 years old when he married Peggy Dunn.
I just know that he had a brother John who was old enough to be his witness. I will get a copy of the record you speak of next time I go into the New England Historical Society in Boston. Does this record say he is the son on John Turner and Nancy Clark?
As far as Margaret Dunn's death. That information came through the Armstrong Geneology started by Charles Newhouse Armstong and fininshed by his son Bertie. A copy is at McGill Univesity. This piece of work was completed back in the 1930's.
Best regards,
Marie

Actually, I misread my data: Robert Turner was born 01/03/1789, and baptized four months later, 03/05/1789. His parents were given as John Turner and Agnes Clark. That couple had two other children baptized in Louiseville: Marguerite (born 11/05/1791, baptized 11/09/1791) and William (born 05/22/1793, baptized 05/23/1793).

Also in Louiseville, I have Robert Turner, son of Robert Turner and Marguerite Dunn, born 01/31/1816, baptized 02/13/1816, and Guillaume Turner, son of Robert Turner and Marguerite Brûlé, born 09/17/1826, baptized 09/18/1826.

I also have a Guillaume Turner, son of Robert Turner and Marguerite Dunn, baptized 02/05/1820 at Saint-Joseph-de-Maskinongé, at the age of 13 months.

There is strong circumstancial evidence for Marguerite Brûlé being the second wife of Robert Turner: she was 12 years younger than he was, and the last known child of the Turner/Dunn couple, William/Guillaume, was born in 1818. Both the 1851 Census data, and his age as given at his burial are consistent with a birth date in 1789 for Marguerite Brûlé's husband.
