Hello, I am trying to trace my ancestor William Meldrum. He came to Millburn from Scotland in about 1854. His wife was Jane/Jean Jamieson. The Meldrum family was quite intertwined with the Jamieson's, with William's daughter Janie marrying a James Stanger Jamieson. What I am specifically looking for is the 1860 and/or 1870 US Census containing William Meldrum. I cannot find one on ancesrty or familysearch. I did find Janie Meldrum on the 1870 census living with a Hockaday family. But no other Meldrum's are to be found. By 1880, they had moved to Missouri. I am trying to pinpoint when the move occured. I speculate between 1860-1870. My great grandfather, Alexander Meldrum, was born in Lake CO in 1859. Coming from Scotland, I would speculate upon a Catholic religious orientaiton. Perhaps if there simply is no record of the 1860 or 1870 census, maybe there are church records or property records with some info?
PS I have thoroughly scoured the Millburn Historical Society webpage. Great info; but looking for more. Thanks.

From Heritage Quest -- probably your folks:

1860 census -- Warren, Lake Co IL
William Mildrum, 44, Scot
Jane Mildrum, 32, Scot
Anne Mildrum, 9, Scot
Jane Mildrum, 7, Scot
Elise Mildrum, 5, IL
William Mildrum, 2, IL
Alick Mildrum, 8/12, IL
.................
Meldrum is one of my main lines. My ggg-grandparents were Rev. William Meldrum (1765-1854) & Mary McDonald (1773-1838). There were from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland -- arrived in USA about 1802 -- settled in KY for 30 years then relocated to Greene Co., IL (about 60 miles North of St. Louis). The Clan probably originated in the Aberdeen Scotland area a few more generations back.
...........
Rootsweb also has a Meldrum Surname Message Board. Have you tried that?

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for all the info. To answer your question about Janie Meldrum and the Hockaday family, she appears on the 1870 US Census under the name Jane Meldram. Place of residence listed as Antioch, Lake Co Ill. Also living in that household was a Charles Martin age 35 and a John Mcguire age 16. William Hockaday seems to be head of house, age 38. His wife Amanda, age 36, child Ida 10 & Cynthia age 7 round it out.

As for DOB for William, all I know is it's about 1815 or 1816, likley in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Though I have no proof of that. However, there is a marriage record dated to Dec 1849 for Old Deer and my guess is that's where he was born.

Thanks for the birth/death cert tip! I will check it out. Let me know if there's any info I can provide for you regarding this family.

Hi Fred,

Wow, thanks for the info! The 1860 census info helps. For some reason, even directly searching under the alternate spelling, this info doesn't come up on ancestry. I've never used heritage quest; I'll be checking it out.

I'm pretty sure I have come across your William Meldrum in my searches. Was he a civil war soldier? I know of one contemporary William Meldrum who was; he was with a Missouri Regiment.

And yes, I have been all over the Meldrum boards. Thanks for the suggestion though.

William Meldrum (1839-1890) was my g-grandfather. He was from Greene Co., IL, but enlisted in the MO 1st Cav. He was a grandson of Rev. William Meldrum who I mentioned in previous posting.

Many libraries offer Heritage Quest free to their members. It has more than census info, there are history/genealogy books also.

In the census you can only search for head of household, but you can also enter place of birth, age group, county of residence, etc. to narrow it down. Sometimes I just search for first name, county & place of birth.

Good luck,
Fred

Did you look at the MO Archive Death Certificate website that Thomas suggested? "advanced search" works best.

On death cert. for Alexander Meldrum: both parents born in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Yes I did. It's been a great resource. I've found a lot about my Wyett family as well. Yep, I've had the Alexander death cert for awhile. I know it says parents were born in Edinburgh, but I think it's wrong. All other pieces of evidence point to Old Deer, Aberdeenshire. Alexander was born in the US, so he may not have known where his father was from. Or whoever the witness was for the death cert didn't know. But who knows? I don't completely rule it out.
