Hi, I am looking for more info on the Goris family. My family line is
Jakob Klaasen Goris m. Jantje Cornellis
(father)Klaas Jacobs m. Geertje Harms Goris - At this point Jacobs takes the Goris name - I would like to know why
(Geertje's parents)Harmen Alberts Goris m. Antje Willems
(father)Albert Goris m.Jantje Berends

I do NOT have many dates and I can not find info on Albert Goris or Klaas Jacobs. Please help me! If my info is incorrect or you have any dates please let me know. Thanks

One thing you should do iin addition to just providing names and no date is put nem
es as you see them in records......Thus

Jakob Klaasen Goris m. Jantje Cornellis which you have is

Jakob Klasen Goris
Jantje Kornelis

Napolean decreed in 1811ish that families would get names ergo ergo thats the reason

At this point Jacobs takes the Goris name - I would like to know why

You appear to have gotten your data from someone's sick family tree...You said

father)Klaas Jacobs m. Geertje Harms Goris - At this point Jacobs takes the Goris name - I would like to know why

It should be geertje Harms........In the
early 1800's ypu are dealing with patrynomic names

Thanks so much. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain all of this!
So if I understand,Geertje was a widow and Klaas Jacobs helped her (he was not her husband). Is this correct? Where can I find records before 1815?

OK what does partner mean? I have another relitive with a "partner" at death, relationship widower.

Thanks again,
Greta

Geertje Harms was a widow ad was married to Klaas jacobs which the records refers to as partner.

Prior to 1810ish your best bet is to put the names into google and look for these people as many Dutch put family trees on line.

Dutch, patronymics were often used in place of family names or as middle names. Patronymics were composed of the father's name plus an ending -zoon for sons, -dochter for daughters. For instance, Abel Janszoon Tasman is "Abel son of Jan Tasman", and Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer: "Kenau, daughter of Simon Hasselaer". In written form, these endings were often abbreviated as -sz. and -dr. respectively e.g. Jeroen Cornelisz. "Jeroen son of Cornelis", or Dirck Jacobsz. The endings -s, -se and -sen were also commonly used for sons and often for daughters too. In the northern provinces, -s, as genitive case, was almost universally used for both sons and daughters. Patronymics were common in the Dutch United Provinces until the French invasion in 1795 and subsequent annexation in 1810. As the Netherlands were now a province of France, a registry of births, deaths and marriages was established in 1811, whereupon emperor Napoleon forced the Dutch to register and adopt a distinct surname.[2] Often, they simply made the patronymics the new family names, and modern Dutch patronymic-based surnames such as Jansen, Pietersen and Willemsen abound. Others chose their profession or habitat as family names: Bakker (baker), Slachter (butcher), van Dijk (of dike) etc.
