In the course of inventorying and assessing the personal property of my brother, Michael Christopher ROPER, Deceased, we came across a Bible which members of our family believe that Michael purchased at an estate sale or from a bookstore more than a decade ago. Michael probably acquired this Bible some time between about 1977 and 1997.

Upon inspection of this Bible, I found that it contains numerous family genealogical inscriptions and notes for the LOVE and ROSSER families.

The Bible contains this inscription "Presented to Thos. William Love on his 16th Birthday. Papa and Mamma. Dec. 23 09". The Bible is inscribed "T. W. LOVE" on the front cover.

The first three entries amongst the births further shows the identity of the one time owner Thomas William LOVE:

Jestina LOVE - Born April 26, 1863.
Thomas LOVE - Born April 13, 1856
Thomas William LOVE - Born Dec. 23, 1893

The Bible contains not only genealogical information SINCE that time, but also what appears to be genealogical information recorded on separate handwritten pages (probably NOT contemporaneous) showing birth information for what appears to be the brothers and sisters of Thomas William LOVE's father Thomas LOVE (b 13 Apr 1856). The EARLIEST entry shown is for a Robert LOVE (09 May 1849). In most instances the entries show dates, but no PLACES. But there are a few useful tidbits showing LOCATIONs, too.

I WILL SCAN, transcribe and POST the genealogical entries shown on other pages over the next several days. If someone can help to identify with greater precision the PLACES this family lived, I will also deposit copies of the genealogical entries at local libraries in those places.

I feel a social responsibility to SHARE the genealogical information with this Bible with members of the LOVE and ROSSER families. In my view, it is UNFORTUNATE that this Family Bible ever left the LOVE family!

At some point AFTER all of the genealogical information has been scanned, transcribed and POSTED, I will probably also auction this Family Bible on eBay, hopefully so that some member of the LOVE or ROSSER family interested in family history has the opportunity to purchase it! This Bible has no sentimental or historic value to OUR family and while we intend to treat this Bible with the respect it merits, it is certainly of greater value to a member of LOVE or ROSSER families.

I would be interested in HEARING from anyone who is a member of the Thomas William LOVE family. Also, I would encourage anyone with additional genealogical information about members of this family to post this information as a REPLY to this message or subsequent messages containing transcriptions of the genealogical entries shown.

Perhaps the most significant of the genealogical entries is NOT what is written on the pages of the Bible itself, but rather what appears on a folded handwritten sheet of paper included therein.

My perception is that this page was probably COPIED from another LOVE family Bible by Thomas William LOVE's parents. I SUSPECT that the genealogical information mostly pertains to the brothers and sisters of Thomas William LOVE's father Thomas LOVE.

One of the clippings found within the Thomas William LOVE family Bible is this obituary of Edward ROSSER:

"ROSSER, Edward, brother of Mrs. Jestina LOVE and William ROSSER of Hammond, Ind.; residence, 4731 Blythin rd., where services will be held Monday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m."

No DATE or newspaper is shown, as the clipping is limited to the Edward ROSSER obituary.

But shown in the Family record for deaths on the pages within the Thomas William LOVE Bible is this entry:

Edward ROSSER - Nov. 14, 1941 - 75 yrs.

Jestina LOVE's maiden name would appear to have been ROSSER and this family was apparently in Hammond, Ind., at least at the 1941 date of Edward ROSSER's death.

Also included within the pages of the Thomas William LOVE Family Bible is the program from the Trinity Baptist Church, Broadway & Fullerton, Cleveland, OH for the services of Dec. 19, 1909, contemporaneous with his parent's gift of the Bible

This seems likely to have been handwritten for her son by Jestina ROSSER LOVE. The last entry is that of Edward ROSSER and it seems plausible that the obituary of Ed ROSSER was enclosed. The reference to brother Dave seems likely to have been a Dave ROSSER. I suspect that Mother and Father are Jestina ROSSER's parents.

The entry on the Death pages within the Thomas William ROSSER Family Bible shows:

Thomas LOVE - Dec. 28, 1930, 74 yrs, 8 Mos.
Edward ROSSER - Nov. 14, 1941, 75 yrs.
Jestina LOVE - June 10, 1945 - 82 yrs.

Note that Thoms LOVE was already dead when the last four entries were written. Jestina LOVE died less than four years after the last entry. Note that no LOVEs are mentioned. It appears to me that the focus is on the ROSSER side of the family.

NOTE: I have shown the SURNAMES in UPPER CASE. They are shown in UPPER and Lower case in the original.

Ed ROSSER's year of death is shown elsewhere within the Bible as Nov. 14 1941. It is UNCLEAR which of these dates is CORRECT, but ought to be readily ascertainable from Indiana death records.

I believe the indications as to Mother and Father are the parents of Jestina ROSSER LOVE (d 10 Jun 1945), age 82.

Correspondents please note that this is NOT my family or a subject of my own genealogical investigations, but rather information from a family Bible that was in my brother's possession at his death. I know ONLY the information shown in the Bible, which I am endeavoring to POST.

George R. Shanton died Sept 24, 1930: George was my half great uncle. Confusing, I agree. His mother was Matilda McGillivary Love Shanton. Twice married.

Alexander Love died Sept 22,1929, Thomas Love died Dec 28, 1930, James Love died Feb 15, 1931 were 3 of her 8 children. Her one daughter, Elizabeth Love Frazee was my gr grandmother. I have some information on the Rosser family.

I can identify a lot of these people -- the Love family.Tom Love was married to Jemima and then to Jestine. The births are many of my Love family members. The Rossers were Jestine's family yet I cannot find any information on her other than as the wife of Tom Love. "Mother" and "Father" and dates of their deaths could be Jestine's parents. Most important to me is the date John Love married Matilda McGillivary and when John died. Then she married Tom Shanton and George & Harry are their sons -- subjects of my book. The notation on John LOVE Sr, died in London C.N. Dec 11, 1862: He died in London, ON meaning London, Ontario, Canada. There were 3 Love kids born in Ontario Canada: Thomas Love (April 1856), my gr grandmother, Elizabeth (28 Apr 1858) and James Cameron Love (7 Sept 1861).

Well, I have an Elizabeth Love (my g-g grandmother) born Ireland 1824, perhaps Co. Cork, but emigrated to Ontario as a child. She married George Wild, born Hampshire, England, in Haldimand Co. Ontario, but she also lived as a child in Hamilton Ontario and in Hamilton after her husband died.
Am looking for her family (parents, siblings, anyone who might have emigrated with her in the 1830s) which is proving rather difficult.

perhaps it would be beneficial to everyone if you turned the bible over to the chickasaw historical society in Ada so it can go in the archives and linked to the right Love family. thata way everyone would have acess to it and can benefit. If someone were to bid on it and find it had no link to their family they might be upset. let me know what you think.

From what I know of this Love family - there is no Chickasaw connection - Yhis Line goes back thru Canada to John Love of Scotland.

Does anyone know of a Chickasaw or other native bloodline attached to this line??

The Thomas Love/Colbert/Emahota InCunomar line is from William 'English Bill" Love from SC & PA. William was a brother to my James.

English Bill Love is one of my ancestors thru the chickasaw line in my family.

Does the Bible contain any information about where this Love Bible may have originated or went before your brother obtained it? My husband has "lost" relatives that scattered from our area 3-4 generations ago that could possibly have been named in the Bible.
