Crowell was the son of James H. Crowell b. 1839 Hamilton, Madison, NY and d. 18 April 1865 in a hospital in Washington, D.C. and Charlotte E. Wickham b. April 1842, died 16 Jan. 1914 in Utica, Oneida, NY. James served in the Civil War for New York, in Company D, 189th Regt., Infantry. He is buried in the Monumental Grove Cemetery in Meridian, Cayuga, NY. Chester and Lillie Crowell had 4 other children: Chester H. Jr., b. July 1884 Iowa, married 1916 Mary E. __ and was living in Arlington, Middlesex, MA in 1930; Ruby M. Crowell, female, b. Dec. 1886 Iowa and may have married in MA after the 1910 Census for Boston; Leroy G. b. Dec. 1888 in IL, married Ruth L. __ and was living in Arlington, Middlesex, MA per the 1930 Census and Clarence P. Crowell, b. June 1895 in Mississippi, married 1920 Martha __.
