Today I've transcribed a new section of the Diary of Miss Kitty May Ellis and in this section she relates an interesting story from the 1883/4 time period of Spokane Falls and Colville which includes:
1) Mr Adam Boyd
2) Mr Havermill the millowner
3) Mr John U Hofstetter
4) and the "new Fort Spokane"

Will The correct name is Mr. Havermale, Havermale island in the Spokane river is named for Mr. Havermale. I know I have read a lot of old handwriting and so it may be hard to read.

Thanks for that correction. Kitty didn't always know how to spell names, I'm just thankful that after 75 years she was able to remember as much as she did.

I'm hoping that somewhere there is some canned biography on John Hofstetter, "the founder of Colville" as the Walla Walla Bulletin called him.

I'd like to put up something useful at wikipedia but I don't really have many details on him yet.

Kitty calls him "F G", but I have found a biography online for a Samuel Havermale

This confirms that he was a millowner for "five years", selling it in 1887. So I assume from 1882.

Since Kitty and her family arrived in May 1883, her story fits this biography so it must be this man she is referring to.
