Kitty calls him "F G", but I have found a biography online for a Samuel Havermale
http://all-biographies.com/ministers/s_g_havermale.htmciting ''Source: An Illustrated History of Southern California; pub. Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co., 1890.''
This confirms that he was a millowner for "five years", selling it in 1887. So I assume from 1882.
Since Kitty and her family arrived in May 1883, her story fits this biography so it must be this man she is referring to.
