my father's name is herschel nipper. His father died when he was a baby, so our family knows very little about my father's relatives. Any info would help.

Among my not-too-distant relatives were/are two Herschel Nippers, father 1925 OK-1995 TX and son 1953 TX. They don't fit with your Herschel being a baby when his father died.

If your father is the Middle Tennessee Herschel, maybe this marriage record from Cheatham County is relevant: Mr. Herschell Nipper and Miss Jewell Winfrey, both age 21, 6 Nov 1937. Buford Winfrey signed the bond. Rev. A.B. Pierse married the couple same day as bond was signed.

Hello,

I am looking for information about family of Elvis "Bud" Nipper. He was my stepfather in the late 1950s. I have made a DVD of my mother who just died and I included pictures of him and a recording of him singing. I believe he was born in the early1920s and had 2 or 3 sons. He was a constrution working mainly installing fences. He was also a professional musician and had an act with my mother, Carol Robinson Williams Nipper Baldasare.

if any wants a copy I would be glad to send it and provide more information

Hi, Carlene:

I believe you are already in contact with Celina Jack, who has studied Ambrose and Emily's descendants more than I. Perhaps you know that Ambrose and Emily were first cousins. Ambrose was a son of Catherine Laramore and James Nipper, and Emily was a daughter of Catherine's sister Priscilla, first wife of Joseph Coffman.

Washington Co., MO online cemetery records are rather good, but provide no indication where Ambrose is buried. He was a Civil War soldier; so, it might be worth your while to see if Emily applied for a pension.

Carlene:

Nancy married Marquis De Lafayette "M.D.L." Burnett 19 Apr 1846, Roane Co., TN. She was still a minor in 1850 when Marquis' father, Samuel Burnett initiated court proceedings to clarify title to lands of James Nipper, father of Nancy. This was obviously a friend of the family suit, as Samuel later served as guardian of Nancy's minor siblings, which included my gggrandfather Richard B. V. Nipper.

When James Nipper came to Roane County about 1816, land south of the Tennessee River was still controlled by Cherokees. About 1820 the area south of the river was opened and James Nipper settled on a ridge west of the community of Paint Rock, which is about 10 miles south of Kingston. Later--after death of James about 1843--Nancy and Richard moved across the ridge east of Paint Rock into Stockton Valley where the Burnetts and Bowmans lived. Samuel Burnett was longtime clerk of the Stockton Valley Baptist Church.

Marquis and Nancy had 13 children. He was a Baptist minister, and moved around quite a bit, even once up into Kentucky, but at census time he and family usually were in Roane County or nearby. A Google search for Marquis D. L. Burnett will bring up a photo of Marquis and his gravestone, as well as some info about him but very little about Nancy.

Carlene:

In 1810, Hudson and Pace Nipper were in Grainger Co., TN. That's the only county in East Tennessee for which a census before 1830 has survived.

I used to think that James Nipper was a son of Pace, but am no inclined to believe that Hudson was the father of James.

I suspect that James drifted down the Clinch River from Grainger County about 1816 when he is listed on a Roane County tax list. The Clinch River joins the Tennessee River at Kingston, county seat of Roane County.

Two place names--Paint Rock and Stockton Valley--are important in our Nipper family history. Do a Google specific term search for Paint Rock Tennessee and Stockton Valley Tennessee to see how close they are. You can enlarge or reduce the maps to gain perspective. Google will show maps placing both places on State Highway 72 about 10 miles west of Loudon and about 10 miles south of Kingston. The land settled by james Nipper was on the ridge west of Paint Rock. The land arranged for Catherine Laramore Nipper in James' intestate settlement was at the south end of Stockton Valley near Cedar Forks Church, i.e., right on the Roane/Loudon County line.
