It seems by the messages that the Bowhays came from this area. I am researching my husband's side and I have a nicholas bowhay born Blackhawton 1794 or thereabouts. Married Ann - no idea of maiden name.

They had at least 7 children - 4 born in blackhawton and the rest in Carleton??

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm replying to Lisa by email, with a transcription of the Bowhays in the Blackawton parish register. Anyone else who's interested can contact me by email also. Paula

hi
thanks for all that info. I'd traced myself back to Nicholas Bowhey and Betty via Nicholas Bowhey and Ann (Jarvis)his wife. Nicholas junior was blacksmith at Milcombe then the family moved to Charleton where his wife was born.

Thank you for that - I did not know Ann's maiden name. So you must be related then to my Bowhay's. I am only a bowhay by marriage BUT my father in law had traced as far back as Nicholas and Ann but did not have Ann's surname.

Cheers
Lisa

Hello Lisa
yes,it sounds as if I am related to your husband. I am aged 59 and my mum was a bowhay - I am the daughter of Constance Bowhay and her dad was Thomas Ernest Bowhay who married Emily and who was born in Westminster. Was he a relative of your husband or are we more distant than that?
My cousin did lots of work on the family tree and ended with Nic and ann in Charleton. She then passed the info to me as I live in Devon so am 'on the spot' for looking in the Devon Records Office. I could not get past the Charleton connection and it was only about a month ago that I found Nic and Betty on the mormon register, then googled Blackawton and found more info on the Genuki site. Meanwhile, I began to trace Ann's parents back and you are welcome to what I have found so far.
Regards from Viv
