Merging information

Hello all... I just realized a problem that I created for myself, and am wondering if there's a good way to fix it.

I had my tree info in Legacy. I exported it for Ancestry, and uploaded it here.

I've added a bunch of info here - my tree is about 30% larger now, which is great.

But, I just realized, when I exported my original tree, non of the details for the living people went with it. All the birth dates etc were stripped.

I don't want to have to re-do all the work that I've done on here.

Is there any way to re-export (I've found the options that I believe will allow me to do that) and merge it into my ancestry version of the tree? Every person will be a duplicate - I just want it to pull the "extra" information into my larger tree.

Any ideas? Thanks!

You need to decide which tree is going to be the primary storage place for your tree, where you store all your research and data. All others will be extracts of this one tree.

I suggest that you choose Legacy as your primary storage place, since you're already using it. You've already found that Ancestry has issues (quite rightly) with displaying information about living people.

You can export your Ancestry data and import it into Legacy to update your tree there. Then get on with your research, adding to your Legacy database, and periodically upload a fresh GEDCOM to Ancestry.

I choose to display a reduced tree at Ancestry and other sites, one that shows my ancestors, their siblings, and the people who married those people. I use a tag in Legacy to identify those people who are to be included, so it's quick to extract an updated file when I want to.

This selection of people is sufficient for my needs, to make contact with people with similar interests. Once we've been in touch with each other and established that we have a connection, I share more data about the particular branch of the family they connect with via Legacy reports.

Hope this helps. :-)

Wendy
