Hi,
Could you check for info about my great grandpa? He was born 1873 in Dallas, Paulding County - name was Henry Joel Hicks. He was a Baptist preacher, and a farmer. Married Matilda (Tildie) Adeline Smith in late 1880's or early 1890, they had several children, William I. Hicks was first, born around 1892. Ggrandpa left to go fight in the Spanish American war, never to return to GA.
He is my brick wall, I would appreciate any information you could find.
Thanks in advance, for your assistance.

My gggrandfather David L. Brock, (b. 1845 d. 1923) (David's parents are my brick wall!) married to Lucy Anne Hulsey, (b. 1854 d. 1940) shown in the 1880 census in Dallas, Pauling Co. They moved to Red River Co.,Texas in the early 1890's and settled along with these families: Petersons, Boulewares, Walkers, and Garrisons in Kiomitia/Kanawha area. I was wondering about the Agrarian movement, and what if any bearing that had on their migration. Did the crops fail? Was there a drought? Was it political? David and Lucy had 6 children when they moved, and the seventh one was born in Texas. What could have caused them to up and move? That part of Texas was still pretty wild and raw, only been settled about 50 or 60 years! Any information or insight would be appreciated.

Michelle,
If it is not too much trouble, will you look for this family in your Paulding Heritage book, please. I will pay for any copies gladly.
William A. "Billy" Burns , born in SC April 9, 1812 , married Luranie Ward on Sept. 14, 1829. She was born 14 Sept. 1829 in GA. They were in Carroll Co. GA in the 1830/40 census and in Paulding Co. GA in the 1850/60 census. Around 1870 the family with grown children migrated to Hempstead Co. AR. He died Mar. 13, 1887. I descend from their son Henry Haynes Burns born in 1835 .Other children were Samuel C. Burns who married Margaret Huckabee;Seaborn B. Burns who married Sarah F. Goggins;Mary Ann Burns who married Thomas J. Palmer; and Nancy Burns who married a Ward.
Any help on Burns or Ward would be appreciated. Thanks.

Go to the Paulding Court House and read the Divorces of 1880 to 1900. A Record Number.
The men could not raise enough crops to susport the family.
The weather had changed. There were several "panics" with the Banks going broke.
More, there was a period of time when there seemed to be more sicknesses and illnesses going around the country-side.

Thank you for your reply. I did some research on the history web site for the 1890's and discovered there was a stock market crash, and like you said, several bad growing seasons. I can see how a family man would look for more affordable land in a place less populated to provide for his family. The history part of genealogy just fascinates me, but then, we live it everyday, don't we?

Could you possible lookup the names.

William J. Williams who according to the 1850 census would have been 22 years old and was married to Katherine "Fuller" who would have been 21 years old. They were the parents of James Madison Williams who was one year old. James was a Confederate Veteran - enlisted at the age of 14 in the fall of 1862. 1869 they moved to Conway County, AR.

Thank you for your kind offer to do lookups.

You are so very sweet to offer look ups. I am looking for the family of James Maxwell. I believe his middle name is Monroe. I don't know who his wife was but they had my GGgrandmother there. Her name was Mahulda Jane Maxwell born August 21, 1851. Her siblings were William L. Maxwell, Nancy Ann and Mary Ann. I don't know how long they lived there, but know they were in Randolph County Alabama in 1859. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much.
