Was there a Chickasaw census taken similar to the ones made of the Cherokee before the Trail of Tears? Primarily interested in Chickasaw in MS and TN.

Ther was a census taken in 1839 of the Chickasaw and one in 1831-2 for the Choctaw. I have that census if I can help you. These census' were taken before removal in Mississippi . I do not know of one done in Tennessee

Bonnie, I am looking for two ladies. One, Jemima Burgess, born 1808, and married Jacob Wilson in 1832. The other is Cynthia/Cinthia Elizabeth McGowan, born Madison Co., AL, then part of Madison County Territory of Mississippi, married John Mills 1826, Madison Co., AL. Both women could have been in TN in their early years. Any clues would be appreciated. Thank you so very much for your reply.

I was not able to find any of those names in the census' of either the Choctaw or the Chickasaw.
However, the Burgess name, in particular, is greatly associated in the Cherokee and Creek Nations, and the Wilson name is found in Cherokee, Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations in great numbers.

b. 1847 in Iuka, MS M. 1865 d. 1926 Stone Co, MO
We were told that her father was the Tribal Cheif but do not have his or her mothers name or any way to proove this.

She was married to Francis Marion Sheppard Sr.

Do you have census informtion on the Tompson or Tomerson family in Iuka, MS.

My gggrandmother and her brother were "removed" from Mississippi around 1837 and ended up in Stonewall IT. Their father was named John Sheyalache Burris and the mother was Checotah. My gggranmothers name was Mary Immioka and her brother was Colbert Ashaylatubby Burris. Sheyalache was said of had a brother named Euklabby who traveled west with Mary, Colbert, and Checotah.(Sheyalache had died sometime before 1837). I found one source that indicated that Sheyalache's father was named Ben Ibbahmehatubby. Colbert later became a prominent leader of the Chickasaw Nation and in the Hall of Fame and there is a section of the Chickasaw museum set aside for him in Tishomingo.
If you have any information about this family before they were "encouraged" to move to IT, I would appreciate a reply.

In the census taken before removal ( 1839), your John Burris is listed as John BURROWS, he had 2 males under age 10, 6 males between 20 - 50, 5 females aged between 10 - 20 years, 3 females between 20 - 50 years, and he then had 1 slave.

Not sure if this is the Ben Ibbahmehatubby you mentioned, but the very next household to John BURROWS was this family:

Itbahhoyubby ( in pronounciation that would be very close, the spelling may have been altered by the census taker, anyway, In Itbahhoyubby's household were 2 males under age 10, 2 males between 10 - 2- years, 1 male between 20 - 50 years, 1 female under age 10, 1 female between 10 - 20 years, 1 female between 20 - 50 years

Burris, John - Chhickasaw, his named spelled BURROWS on the 1839 census where he lived near Tennessee Bynum in the Indian Territory ( east). A John Burris is shown on the annuity rolls of 1859 ( west).

page 84:

Burris, Colbert Ashalatubbe - Chickasaw, born on April 1, 1824, the son of John and Checotah Burris. His father died when he was five years of age. Coolbert moved west in 1837, signed the treaty of 1861, served on the tribal supreme court in the 1870's and was a district judge in 1893, and a deacon in the methodist church. In 1875 he and his family lived in Ponotoc County, in 1890 the family resided in Stonewall. His household including:

Burris, Laura age 44
Burris, Lem age 20
Burris, George age 17
Burris, Nettie age 14
Burris, Cecelia age 2

He die din Stonewall on July 16, 1907.
His first wife was Annoyi Palmer, said to have been a full blood. She died on March 11, 1868.
In 1869 he married Laura D. Bradley ( born in Branson, Mo. Jan. 3, 1845, a white woman, she died Feb. 14, 1929 at Stonewell.
Colbert was the father of 19 children, among them:

Thank you much for the time and effort you put into your reply. It looks likely that the people reported in the census are my ancestors and finding where they lived in the old IT is very useful. It's to bad that the early census takers left out so much detail about the households they surveyed!
One of my other projects is to find the family of my GGrandmother Lucy Parker or Pickens? She is listed in the Dawes Roles as full blood Chickasaw but I have yet to find convincing evidence of her parents names. She was married to my Ggrandfather Daniel Peyton Harrison. Daniel was the son of Mary Immioka Burris the sister of Colbert Burris.
My grandmother was named Cecelia Jane the same name as one of Colberts daughters.

There is a partial 1818 Chickasaw census. There are also muster rolls of Chickasaws preparing to go west. OK Historical Society has these records. You might be able to find them in Tishomingo, OK at the Chickasaw Historical Society.
