Manuel Monasterio

I am looking for ancestors of Leopoldo Corrales Morales of Fuentesauco in the province of Zamora. He was born approximately 1850 and he married Escolastica Martinez Cortabitarte. Leopoldo made his fortune in the chickpeas business (garbanzos) in Fuentesauco, where he owned land. He and his wife moved to Bilbao and had one daughter, Amalia Corrales Martinez (born 1883), my great grandmother.

I appreciate any information you can provide.

Hi Manuel -
Leopoldo has five children in Bilbao area. Four of them christened in the parish of San Vicente Martir:
Angela born 1880
Maria del Carmen Epifania 1882
Amalia born 1883
Benita Francisca Josefa born 1886

He may also have a son,
Francisco born 1878
in another parish, but no parents listed on the summary
so I can be sure he belongs to Leopoldo.

These records are too late to be retrieved from the microfilms. So you will have to decide whether you prefer
to order one from the AHEB-BEHA (if you haven't already)
I hear it is a bit "pricey" or if you'd like to contact the
civil registration office in Bilbao.

I tried to check Fuentesauco, Zamora. The only microfilm of a Fuentesauco is out of Segovia. Nothing there. Nothing just generally in Zamora on film #1543000.

Let me know if you don't have the rest of the information
on those children. I'll be happy to send it to you when I'm on my home computer.

Dear Susan:

Thanks for your note, and for researching the names of the children. I am sorry that I have not gotten back to you yet on doing more Monasterio research. It is still my intention to do so.

Yes, all of these children (including Francisco) are Leopoldo's, and all (except for Amalia) died of diptheria. Amalia is my great grandmother, who benefited from all the attention of being the lone survivor.

Leopoldo made his fortune growing chickpeas in Fuentesauco. Apparently, he trusted his sister to continue to manage his land holdings there, but she robbed him blind, causing him such grief that he died soon after discovering the awful truth.

I have been trying to locate his origins but have so far come up empty handed. Any ideas?

Regards,

Manuel

The next step would be to find a good gazeteer (hmmm...I really need one at home!) and check to see if there are records for him in a Parish near Fuentesauco.

Another option is to write a letter of inquiry to the
church in Spain and see if they would help, but that is
not always fruitful.

Neither of these options is going to be a "quick fix," but be patient and persistent and it will probably pay off for you. I just had a couple extra minutes at the Library last evening, and saw your posting and wanted to try to help. I thought it would be fun to just "find it" and post it for you here, but alas, nothing in the two places I could check.

Do not worry that you haven't gotten back as a "client"
It's nice that you continue to let others know that I am here and willing to put my time into helping them. Wish my husband were independently wealthy and I could just do this for free all of the time.

Keep in touch,
Susan
