I am looking for information on my great grandfather Jasper Charles Helmantoler born in 1846 in Massac Co. Ill, and married to Laura Gurley. I am also looking for information on my 2nd great grandfather Eli Helmantoler, Born in Tennessee in 1820, who died in Massac Co. Ill. in 1893. He was married to Mary Oliver and then to Elizabeth Cash. I am also looking for information on the Gurleys and the Olivers.

I am kin to Mary Oliver Helmantoler and to her son, Jasper Helmantoler's, first wife, Mary Oliver.

It gets a little confusing. Eli Helmantoler married Mary Oliver in Hickman Co KY. Mary was the daughter of Shadrack Oliver,Sr and Sarah Vaughan Oliver. Shadrack, Sr and Sarah had five children: William Oliver who migrated to Marshall Co KY; Leander who stayed in Hickman/Fulton Co; Mary who married Eli Helmantoler and migrated to Massac Co; Shadrack Oliver, Jr who migrated to Massac Co; and Joseph Oliver who stayed in Fulton Co until he became of age and then he sold the land he had inherited and followed his mother Sarah Oliver, his sister Mary Helmantoler, and his brother Shadrack Jr. to Massac Co.

Old Shadrack died in 1846 in Fulton Co KY, after which the migrations began. Shadrack Jr married Sarah "Sally" Morse/Moss daughter of Pennington Morse/Moss and Frances Guess Morse/Moss in Massac Co. Joseph married Nancy Robbins, daughter of Absolem Robbins, in Massac Co.

Shadrack Oliver Jr. and Sally had 6 children: William, Mary, Shadrack, Paralee, John E. and Sarah Francis. Paralee is my ancestor and Mary, her sister, married your great grandfather, Jasper C. Helmantoler. Jasper and Mary were first cousins. Jasper's mother, Mary, and his first wife, Mary, 's father, Shad, Jr were brother and sister.

Mary died and he married Laura Gurley.

The Oliver family can be traced back to Alexander Oliver and Elizabeth Crawford in Chowan Co NC in the early 1700's. Ruth Ann Hunt and I have a lot of material for this family.

I also descend from Stephen Gurley in North Carolina. His descendants came into Union Co in the 1830s. Willis, Laura's father, probably descends from this line of Gurleys.

My brother and I have been trying to prove he is the son of Jacob Helmantoler and Margaret ? We think Jacob's father is John Jacob Helmantel, whose father is Michael, who we think is a son of Johann Andoni Hellenthal - but so far have not found any real proof. Do you have anything???

Willis Gurley's father was Willis Sr, son of Isham Gurley and Sarah Gaddy. Is that your line? I think they were in Johnson Co. NC.

I don't have primary sources but have considered John(Johann) Jacob /Helmantel/ Helmantoler as the father. He was born in 19 Feb 1767 Manakees MD near Fredrick MD and was the son of Michael Helmantel.

I have a Eli Helmantoler born 1820 in Tennessee - and his brother James born in 1817. I had their father's name as Jacob. I could be wrong, however.

My relatives came from James Helmantoler - who had a daughter named Barbary who married Leonard McCrory

That seems right. Do you have primary sources for James and Eli as children of Jacob? I assume they were brothers because they bought land in Massac Co. Illinois in 1850. My regular emails is mhelmantoler@yahoo.com

I am looking for information regarding the Helmantoler family as well.

The persons most directly linked with the most accurate information are Sarah Jane Helmantoller 1881-1932 and Thomas Cephas Corley 1876-1957. I am trying to trace the Helmantoller family line. I have as possible parents for Sarah Jane as Thomas and Julia Ann F Sullins from a family tree I found on this site from michael?

My granparents used to go to the Helmantoller family reunions in TN. My grandmother talks about the amazing American Indian women in the family, but we have never been able to prove or find evidence of the Native American connection. She thinks maybe Cherokee Indian, but just because of the region.

I would appreciate any help or contact regarding this search.

I found the info about Julia Ann Sullens and Thomas Helmantoler when I visited Smith County grave yards and interviewed Sadie Kolbe (Corby) the widow of Robert Dewey Helmontolor. It seems that everyone has a Cherokee woman in their Tennessee linage.
