"Mrs. Chase owned farm land at Concession XI, Lot 6, just north of the John Howsam property. She is listed as a widow in 1881, and I would like to knoow what happened to her husband John, as well as her children. Two of the latter took homesteads in Eastern Saskatchewan about 1898, but I cannot trace the others, nor do I know exactly where this couple were born, married, or died. Family lore says the ones who came to Saskatchewan came from Uxbridge. One lived at Marsh Hill (probably John Thomas or Thomas John, father of Walter Byron Chase)

I have access to local records, so if you want me to check cemetery records in Reach Township, let me know. I can also check the 1861 census to see if John is still alive at that point. Hope some of this is helpful.

Thank you so much. A decendent of John Thomas says she has Walter Byron's marriage certificate (son of John Thomas) and he is married to an Eliza Longfield (a George Longfield was witness to Henry's marriage apparently.) Perhaps he was married twice, but strange that his son was living with his grandmother Barbara later on. A check of the 1861 census to see if John was alive then would be great, also to see who John Thomas is with. Also looking for a Robert and Barbara Chase in the 1861 census. And there is some discrepancy between the names of John and Barbara's family according to census records versus family records. I also see that Barbara's maiden name is listed as Moon in one place but Moore in another. The latter sounds more likely. If you have access to cemetery records, that information would also be greatly appreciated, expecially for John Thomas and John Sr., both of whom seem to have died young? I hope to visit Reach County next summer.

Will definitely check when I get to the library later this week. Reach Township is now part of Durham County, but in the timeframe you are researching, it was part of Ontario County (which no longer exists).

Well, not a lot of success. I can't find any of them in the 1861 Reach Township census, suggesting that they moved from somewhere else. There is a Chase family in neighbouring Uxbridge Township, which may be a connection, and I can check there next. I've transcribed the 1851 Uxbridge Census, and John is not part of that family at this point, although he is probably already married.

Barbara's last name is definitely MOON on Henry's marriage registration and I did find four MOON families in Reach Township:

Moon, Samuel, Farmer, b. C.W., Episcopal Methoidst, 25
Moon, Sarah, b. England, 65
Moon, Susannah, b. CW, 22
Macdermet, Sarah, b. CW, 1

Moon, William, tenant, b. England, married 1854, Ep.M., 38
Moon, Elizabeth, b. England, 28
Moon, Sarah S., b. UC., 5
Moon, Martha A., b. UC, 3
Moon, Susan, b. UC, 1

Moon, Robert, Farmer, b. England, married 1853, Ep.M., 33
Moon, Frances, b. England, 51
Moon, Edward, b. UC, 6
McDermott, Lucia, b. UC, Reach, 16

Moon, James Sr., farmer, b. England, Bible Chr., 42
Moon, Catherine, b. England, 25
Moon, Elizabeth, b. CW, 10
Moon, William N.J., b. CW, 3
Moon, James Jr., b. CW, 1
Jennings, Dennis, School Master, b. England, Bible Chr., 22
McDermott, Mary, b. CW, 9

I checked death records up to 1908, but did not find Barbara. Possibility that she lived up to and past that date, so will have to check further records next time.

Cemetery listings were also disappointing:

The Pines Presbyterian Cemetery, Lot 11, Conc. 2, Reach
==========================================

Broken stone: In memory of Jams Bennard, son of Henry & Sarah Jane CHACE died July 27, 1883, aged 4 years, 7 months, 27 days

Pine Grove Cemetery (Prince Albert), Reach Township
=======================================

James MOON 1819-1896; Catherine Mark, his wife, 1830-1916; also 9 infant children

Next plot:
Nicholas Mark, native of Cornwall, England, died June 29, 1882, aged 78 years, 5 days
Anne, beloved wife of Nicholas Mark, died November 27, 1873, aged 67 years, 9 months, 21 days

I did find one marriage in the Ontario County Marriage Register (index entry only):
Wm. CHASE of Reach, son of John, married Eliza SHEARER, of Mariposa, daughter of Thomas, 1868

Also these:
Marriages by John Brown TAPP, Minister of Bible Christian Church in Canada at Mariposa in 1848-49
===========================================
Joseph GOULD, Mary MOON, by banns, Witnesses: James MOON, farmer, Catherine MARK, April 25, 1848, in Reach

Thomas HAYWARD, Martha MOON, by license, Witnesses: James MOON Sn., James MOON Jr., Farmer, Aug. 12, 1848 in Reach

James MOON, 30, Yeoman, of Reach, Catherine MARK, 20, by banns, Witnesses: Robert KOON?, Nicholas HARK, Yeoman, Jan. 18, 1849, in Reach

From the History of Reach Township:

Thus provided from some sources and imperilled from others, he was by and by privileged with new neighbors: and we mention them here, though they came in at successive periods, to inhabit the earlier settlements on the road northward. Eighteen months after Solomon Orser, his neighbor Mr. Mark became a settler. Next in order was Jeremish Orser, then James Moon, to the south of the Nonquon, next to Charles Black on the 14th concession, and lastly Thomas Shaw on the 11th with others at later dates.

Thank you so much for your efforts. We are deeply indebted. Some of the family (not sure if it was Chase or Howsam) used to refer to themselves as "Yankee Dutch" so I'm not sure how long they were in the area. Some of them are believed to have come West from the Uxbridge area, especially James Henry and family, but perhaps others as well.

Hello Eileen,

Have been following this thread with you and Alan.

I have John Thomas CHACE b.1860 s/o John and Barbara, married 4 Jul 1880 to Mary RAMSEY b.14 Feb 1858 d/o William and Ann who are my GGgrandparents. Would love to compare notes with you. I haven't checked, but they may be living in Mariposa, Victoria County which is where the Ramsey family were living, after their marriage and before moving to Niagara.

GGgrandfather Wm Ramsey, mentions in a letter dated 24 Sep 1898, that the CHACE family is living near Niagara....
"well I think I told you in my Last Letter that tom Chaces had gon up near niagra he as a secion up theyr"

Hope this helps
Noreen

Noreen, I'm not connected to this family; was just trying to help out Allan; but based on your info, I found Thomas and family in Mariposa in the 1891 census:

1891 census 121d2 family 206

So if Walter is John Thomas' son, it must be from an earlier marriage that we can't find .... or had out of wedlock, and perhaps the mother died????

Walter byron's birth certificate lists an Eliza Longfield as his mother. We are puzzled as to what happened to her?

Greetings Noreen! The Chase family are my wife's relatives, of whom we know little. My father-in-law is Stewart Crawford of Rocanville, SK (45 minutes south fo where I live.) His mother was Iola Millicent Chase, and her father was George Walter Chase. The latter died at Rocanville, Sask., and James Byron, his brother, also died in a neighbouring community I believe (met one of his descendents a few years ago, now deceased.) A brother of Iola's, John Byron Chase, had three kids, and one of them, Reta, is still living in B.C. Somehow she became acquainted with a descendent of John Thomas', Arlena Dodd of Victoria, B.C., and the latter recently contacted me after a conversation with Reta. It was this latter person, Arlena, who put me onto the track of the Chases in Reach County after I had failed to find them in the Uxbridge area (where we understood they had come from). I am so grateful to her and now to Eileen and yourself for the fascinating details we never had before. I am forwarding the messages on the board to Arlena by email and she too is excited. I need a bit of time to digest today's information (I tend to get all these names mixed up, and the generations!) Arlena is the one who told me of the Longfield connection - she apparently has Walter Byron's marriage certificate. It appears the William Chase at Mariposa in the 1891 census is 10 years too old to be the William who was the brother of Walter, Thomas and the rest, unless my previous info is wrong.
