I am trying to find any info on my great grandmother and her family. She is Mary Oletti Otterbeck who was born in Norway and came to America with her family. Her siblings were Matilda, Christina and Andrew Otterbeck. They came to America with their mother and stepfather--Ann and Anthon Skanchy. Mary married Peter Christensen in Utah. I am trying to go back farther on the Otterbeck family in Norway. The children's biological father was a sea captain in Norway and went down with his ship. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Without dates? Nearly impossible.

Anton Skanchy appears in 1900 US census in Cache Co. Utah. Listed as born Sept 1839 in Norway, immigrated 1868, married to second? wife, Sigrid, also from Norway. They've been married for 14 years but Anton was first married about 32 years earlier - so about 1868.
(Another person named Skanchy on same page lists birthplace as Sweden...)

Various entries on FamilySearch webpage list Maria Oletti Otterbeck as born 1855 in Kragero, Telemark, Norway - daughter of Anders Ludvig Otterbeck? and Anne Christine Jakobsen. The various submissions do not seem to be carefully researched and they differ wildly from each other in many details.

The 1865 Norwegian census shows 'Maren Olette Otterbeck' living in Larvik, Vestfold, Norway but indicates that she was born in Kragerø, Telemark, Norway. She is living as the foster child? of a woman whose maiden name was Otterbeck.
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...

Her mother is living in Kragerø, Telemark and listed as a widow -
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...

That census also shows various other Otterbek/Otterbecks living in that general part of Norway - Olso, Tonsberg, Larvik, Kragerø and Porsgrunn.

Good 'how-to' for using the Norwegian records and primary sources (thereby eliminating the confusion and errors found in family tree information found online) can be found at

As I was reading this message again, it dawned on me that the name Otterbeck was familiar.
I believe that Christina (middle name Victoria) married a Thomas Winn. They had a Josephine Winn. Josephine married Joseph Heber Pilkington. Joseph had Josph Floyd who had Kenneth Jack who had Kenneth Lance who had me. It appears that the web site www.familysearch.org has a lot of info on this otterbeck family. It lists Christina's father as Andrew born in Christinia, Norway about 1828 and died at sea on 4/12/1883. He married Ann Christine Jacobson on or about 1853. They had at least 5 children (4f, 1m):

Anne Mathilda OTTERBECK
-Born: 18 Jan 1854 Place: Christinia, Norway
-Died: 9 Aug 1885 Place: Smithfield, Cache, Utah

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mary Oletti OTTERBECK
-Born: 12 Oct 1855 Place: Kragero, Tronjim, Norway
-Died: 24 Feb 1886 Place: Logan, Cache, Ut

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Christina Victoria OTTERBECK
-Born: 17 Feb 1859 Place: Christiana (now Oslo), Oslo, Norway
-Died: 30 Dec 1932 Place: Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Ut
-Buried: 2 Jan 1933 Place: Smithfield, Cache, Ut

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maren (Mary) OTTERBECK
-Born: 10 Dec 1856 Place: Christinia, Norway
-Died: 24 Feb 1886 Place: Logan, Cache, Utah

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andrew Nicoli OTTERBECK
-Born: 10 Dec 1861 Place: Christinia, Norway
-Died: 12 Apr 1885 Place: Logan, Cache, Utah

One thing to keep in mind is that these records are from the family group record and may be subjec to errors.
Hope this helps or is a start

According to an autobiographical sketch Anthon Lorenzo Skanchy married a widow with four children in 1868 shortly before migrating to American and on to Utah. He was missed on the 1870 census but can be found on the 1880 census in Logan, Utah. He died in 1914 at Logan.
I am interested in this family and especially any proven connection with the Otterbeck line. Particularly with a Maren O. who married a Peter Christensen and lived in Weston, Idaho before relocating to Newton, Utah in the mid-1870s.

I am also interested in finding more information on the Maren O. (Mary O.) who married Peter Christensen while living in Weston, Idaho probably in 1871. By the mid-1870s they relocated to Newton, Utah, where they remained until
Maren (Mary)'s death in Feb. 1886. I believe she is buried in the Logan City Cemetery in the Skanchy plots near her mother's grave.
My problem is in determining if she was an Otterbeck or as the husband of her mother put the name in writing--as Krogero.

I have come across this family from time to time. i have them on a list of emigrants I am working on.

Andreas Ludvig Andersen Otterbech, of Tønsberg

married Anne Christine Olsdatter born in Kragerø 8 Sep 1833.

He died in Solum, Porsgrunn or Skien. I see on several trees, he supposedly died at sea in 1883, the year is obviously wrong.

Anne Christine and children are listed as leaving Kragerø for Liverpool on the Oder 29 May 1868.

+ Anne Claudine Mathea Kragerø 12 Jan 1854
+ Maren Olette Kragerø 12 Oct 1856
+ Ludvige Kristin ( 9 years)
+ Anders Nikolai Kragerø 13 Oct 1860

In Anthon Skankeys biography, found on Ancestry, he tells of marrying in Oslo, before leaving for Copenhagen to Liverpool on the John Bright.

Anne Christine was a mormon,I see birthdates for the children, when the family moved between parishes in Telemark. Seem to remember it was to Porsgrunn or Solum.
