One important thing to remember is that just because maintenance was paid this does not mean there is a court record, it could have been voluntary. I had an illegimate relative, fully acknowledged by the father. The mother actually styled herself and the girl under the father's name and sent the girl to the same school as her half-sister while the father commuted between the two families!! Maintenance was always paid. His legal wife died, fully aware of the situation, before him and when he died they got everything he possessed, much to the disgust of the other family - but there was never any sort of legal arrangement.
