I am related to two Commins families (brothers) who lived near Dowagiac and Watervliet in the 1870's through the 1930's. Their names are Thomas Commins (married to Mary Mullen) and Dennis Commins (married to Honora King). The two brothers immigrated to the U.S. from Ardee, County Louth in the 1850's. Their married sister, Catherine Commins McCartney, was already living in Milan, Ohio. Both brothers had large families. I have traced most of the descendants of these two families. Are you related to these Commins of southwest Michigan

My grandfather - George William Commins was born in Bay City, Michigan between 1872 and 1880. His father was Marc Commins (born in England), his mother was Julia Ann Coward (born in Ireland). George Commins moved to Vermont. I cannot find any record whatsoever on his parents.
Would you have anything?

Sorry, no. My Commins relatives came from Count Louth, Ireland (near Ardee) in the 1850's. The two brothers were named Thomas and Dennis Commins. Their sister, Catherine Commins McCartney, lived in Milan, Ohio and then Oakley, Michigan

I do not know anything about the family that you were inquiring about. My grandfather, Ernest Elon Commins, lived in Evart, Michigan.I only met him a few months before he died. I do not know if these people were relatives of his. I know his parents were Jason and Elizabeth Commins. I know a that my mother's family has done quite a bit of geneology research, but I do not know much about my father's side of the family. Would appreciate any info that you might could provide.
thanks,
Donna Commins Armstrong

My Commins relatives from County Louth lived near the town of Ardee (also Charlestown, Tallanstown). The names are Catherine Commins McCartney, Dennis Commins of Cass County, MIchigan, Thomas Commins of Cass County, MI and Elkhart, Indiana, Mary Commins Moran (and her descendants named Salliotte and Cummings), and Alice Commins. A sixth sibling, Patrick, stayed in Ardee when the others immigrated to American around 1850.

Hi

just came across this board - I'm tracing Durnin ancestors and I've found a bapismal record for who I think is my great-great-grandfather Edward Durnin. The record is from the parish of Ardee on 17th Sep 1853 and his mother is listed as Alicia Commins. Could this Alicia be the same as your Alice? According to your info, did Patrick, Catherine, Mary and Alice all stay in Louth

Of my Commins ancestors, Catherine, Thomas, and Dennis all immigrated to the U.S. Patrick remained in Ireland on the family land and his descendants still live there today. We have never known what happened to Alice. Perhaps she married your Durnin ancestor. We do know that her sister Catherine and her brother Thomas both named daughters after her.

Did your g-g-grandfather Edward stay in Ireland or is he your ancestor who immigrated?

No, Edward stayed, he moved to Meath and raised a family, a couple of whom (two daughters) are said to have emigrated to America in turn. Another daughter Mary Jane Durnin went into service in Dublin and married my great grandfather John Mernagh. And we're still in Dublin.

Do you know what the Commins' father or mothers names were?

Hmmmm. . . I know there's an entry in the parish records in Ardee for the birth of a Peter Durnin (7.12.1838) to Edward Durnin and Ally Commins of Hale Street. The sponsors were Pat Martin and Mary Bannon. Would this Peter be one of your great-grandmother's brothers?

The parents of our Alice Commins were Patrick Commins and Judith Fox. Alice is a sister to my great-grandmother Catherine Commins McCartney
