I have a Elario Herrera married Dionisa Magallenas, she was born aprox 1870, would guess that he was born perhaps a few years prior, their daughter Fidelia Herrera (my grandmother) was born in 1888. All of the family was from
Zacatecas and Aquascalientes. My mother had mentioned that she had cousins that were Arab, could this be a possiblilty on Garay & Olaque? Who are your Herrera's?
Gracias, Helyn

Hi John,
I, too, am searching for Garay. My grandfather, Francisco Gonzalez(s), was born c. 1875 to Jose Gonzalez and Maria Garay, in Jerez, Zacatecas. That's all I know about his family! He claimed he left home early and alone, and never went back. I obtained his parents' names from his Social Security application, but have not been able to find a baptismal, marriage or civil registry entry. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My grandfather Jose Maria Herrera was born in Tlalgenano de Sanchez Roman, Zacatecas around 1900, he had two brothers Manuel and Jessie one sister Norberta. Their parents were also born in the same town, the father was Otilano Herrera and the mother was Ysidra Yniguez, I am guessing they were both born around 1870's.I haven't found any information on Hererras from this town.

Thank you for your response. I will be doing some serious digging this summer, I will keep your family names with me, and will be happy to share any findings. Since we are both researching around the same time, in a rather small town, I bet there is a connection somewhere. Saludos, Helyn

Hello, Helyn,

I notice in your message that you wondered if the origin of the names Garay and Olague were Arab?

Those names appear in a book I have called "apellidos vascos" (Basque Surnames). My father's name was Guadalupe Olague (from Jerez, Zacatecas. He had told me that his surname was Basque. There is also a town in Navarra in Spain with that name. There are many people in Zacatecas with Basque surnames, since it was settled by Juan de Onate's father, who was a Basque.

Emilie, I am related to the Olague family as second cousins, actually Maximillio Olague from East Los Angeles was my Paternal Grandmother's first cousin. I am not sure if their origins are from Zacatecas. I am stiil looking for people with the surname Garay. Thank you for your time.

Hello, John Garay,

I noticed in your March message that you included the surname Olague, but you only asked for the origin of the name Garay. It is of Basque origin according to a book I have called "apellidos vascos" (Basque Surnames). My father's name was Guadalupe Olague. He was from Jerez in Zacatecas. My father had told me Olague was a Basque name and it is also mentioned in the book. There is also a town in Navarra with that name. There are many Basques in Zacatecas I think because it was settled by the father of Don Juan de Onate, who was Basque. How are you related to the Olagues? Do you know of any Olague relatives in Jerez or Zacatecas? I have not been able to find any Olagues in the Internet that are from Jerez or Zacatecas. In the list of those who were in the Onate party in 1601 was a Francico Olague. My grandfather's name was also Francisco Olague.

My name is Emilie Marquez Olague de Garcia
