I have ton of Cartwright's in my family tree-dating from 1887 back to 1594. I have an excerpt from an olf family tree that has this explanation of the Surname Cartwright on it-It is compiled from Parrish registers,Wills Quaker records in 1895 1897 by William Cartwright.
When Albiou was aforest covered a family that wrought in wood iron became the makers of the two wheeled ox cart, the pioneer vehicle of ancient transportation; thier handicraft engrafted upon them the family surname Cart-wright. By English history tradition surnames appeared about the tenth century although not becoming general until the Reformation times of the fourteenth century. The cart wheel became family escutcheon or shield of honor; its curved lines, symunetrical harmony of form utility in lightening the burdens of humanity implied skill, ingenuity, love of the race; faculties surviving unto the latest generations of thier desendants. The name glistens at various periods in recorded history as yeomen, statesmen, reformers, soldiers, sailors, divines, independents, explorers, inventors,8cc. following in the surging column of human record. Late in the eighteeth century a Cartwright(a clergyman) invented applied the orignal self-acting power weaving loom, a potent factor in the idustrial world, its musical click-clack now throbbing in every textile factory throughout Christendom. Energy and love of the race, as broad as the humantty(?hard to read) of the Quakers of the seventeenth century still marched withthe column Cartwright.
On the paticular Tree I have it has the Cartwright logo as a ox cart wheel that says-The glory of children are thier fathers.
It has a drawing of St. Peter's church Oadby, England- built in 14th Century.
There is more- contact me if you are interested. I do not have locations for many of the people in my tree but I do have names and most birth years.
The Pedigree of Matthew Cartwright.
