Finding my grandfather's Captain.

Here is the basic gist. I am doing a family history and there was a captain of my grandfather who he cared about a lot. I have little to no information on him. Is there anyway of finding the unit and who this might have been?

I found a basic record for my grandfather on NARA though I am afraid this is all it has as far as designations.

GRADE: ALPHA DESIGNATION PVT# Private
GRADE: CODE 8 Private
BRANCH: ALPHA DESIGNATION BI# Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA
BRANCH: CODE 00 Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA

Any ideas where to start?

Thx in advance.

Can you supply the names of your grandfather, and that of the captain's?

Do you have any info on your grandfathers service? What service? Any unit information? If you have it, his discharge papers will show what unit he was assigned to.

No idea on the Captains name which will make this a lot harder. Grandfather's name is Merrill B Halteman. He was supposed to have severed in the Air force but I have yet to find hard data. I wish I knew more but such is the way of such things.

The discharge papers will only show the unit he was in at time of discharge. His wartime service would encompass several years, and during that time he would have had dozens of different captains or company commanders. The discharge document is a good starting point and working backwards you can proceed. Once the unit of discharge is identified, you'll want to obtain copies of the "Morning Reports", which are a military daily roll call. They will show the date he came to that unit and from which other unit....obtain those morning reports and continue on..............Once you have compiled a list of all units he belonged to and when, then you can request or research the individual unit histories and the corresponding commanding officers. Quite a task...Good Luck!
