Whittemore family

Hi, I am a Whittemore from Tennessee and have been tracing my family roots for sometime. I've gotten back to a 4th great grandfather whose name was Gower Whittemore (Whitemore). I hired a researcher from NC who found a great deal of information, but was unable to find who his parents were. He may have come from Brunswick, VA. Gower married Pasty Dickens in NC abt. 1798 before moving to TN abt. 1806. His family settled in Coffee Co before he went to Louisiana & died there on Jan. 30, 1815 as a result of either injuries or sickness from the Battle of New Orleans. Does anyone know anything about Gower?
Thank you, Marilyn

What if Gower was a middle name? I have found in many records that people used their middle names instead. There is a "Willim G. Whitemore" who was found in Brunswick VA. Could this be him? Maybe this is someting to look into.
Let me know if this helps?
What information do you have on Gower's family from TN? I am researching the Whittemore tree, and would love to share.

Thanks,
Debbie

Hi Debbie, Thank you for your reply to my message. I've thought for some time that Gower was a middle name. Where might I find the information on the William G Whitemore from Brunswick, VA? Also, my information on Gower Whitemore is on my Ancestry.com site under Whittemore family. Just go to search, family trees and type in Gower Whittemore born abt 1780. I'm just guessing on his birthday. He was married to Martha Patsy Dickens from Caswell Co., NC in 1798. They stopped for a while in Jackson Co., TN and then moved onto either Cannon or Coffee Co., TN. Gower died in 1815 either from illness or injuries as a result of the Battle of New Orleans. Patsy filed and was made administrator of his estate in 1817 & she sold his discharge paper for $17.00. Patsy died in 1826 & is buried in Hopewell Baptist Cemetery in Woodbury, Cannon Co., TN. There is more on my Ancestry site, but I'll be happy to share with you whatever I have found out. Currently I am awaiting some information from NC concerning the possibility that Martha may have borne an illigetimate child in 1794. Once I get that info I am going to pass it along to a Dickens descendant who also has been looking into this. Which Whitemore family are you looking into? Let me know if I can help.

Marilyn

William G Whitemore was found in the 1810 census records for St andrews Brunswick VA. I wonder if the G stands for Gower? I plan to investigate this further. I have read about Patsey Dickens possibly having a child out of wedlock. His name was suposively Baxter Dickens. The person who wrote it was a Dickens, and it was only a speculation. Let me know what you come up with.
I am searching John Robert Whittemore's linage from Buncombe NC. I believe he might be a descendent of Thomas Whittemore the Immigrant. I am working on a theory, and in the process of gathering information. So, I am actually looking at all clues on the Whittemores and Whitmores from SC, NC, VA, TN, and GA. I will be happy to share what I have, and will tell you more about what I have found this weekend when I have more time.

Hi, I found William G in the 1810 census & it looks as if he was 45 or above. He wouldn't have been our Gower because Gower was in TN by that time, but I've thought he maybe Gower's father or an uncle. I am having the DNA test run on my brother to trace our Whittemore line to see if we are descended from Thomas Whittemore who came from Hitchens, England. It'll be several weeks before we know anything, but I'll let you know what I find out. In the meantime, I'm still searching for Gower's parents. Sometime in the late 1700's the Whittemore's (Whitemore) came into NC. There was a Charles, Howell & Jesse who all seem to be closely connected in that they married & appear on different documents from Orange &/or Caswell Co., NC during those times. Gower was there too & married in Caswell in 1798. Hopefully we can keep piecing together the clues until we find a connection that leads to their parents. I look forward to whatever you find out & I'll keep you posted on what I find.

Have you got the results of the DNA tests yet? Are you a decendant of Thomas Whittemore from England? I am interested in knowing if Gower is of English descent.

Hi Debbie, Yes we have gotten the results back & we don't match Thomas Whitmore from Hitchens, England. In fact we don't match anyone who has taken the test yet. We do have several 12 point matches for others with different surnames & one 36/37 point match with a Holcomb family. I haven't followed up on that yet because we having a deeper test run on the DNA to clarify it a little further.

I don't know if not matching any of the Whittemore's so far tested means we are not Whittemore's due to adoption somewhere along the lines or if there is another branch of Whittemore's who came into the country apart from the ones that are descended from Thomas. Hopefully we'll find out before too long.

I am still looking for Gower's parents & have just recently received some information from Brunswick Co., VI where there seems to be some names we've run across in NC...Jessee & Howell as well as 2 William Whittemore's (a father & son). It seems that the younger William died & may have left his children in the care of a Gower family. This sounds a little promising, but then it may be a rabbit trail. I'll let you know what I find out.

Have a great day,
Marilyn

Marilyn,
Thankyou for the information, which was quite suprising. Please keep me posted.
I would like to know more about the William Whittemore who died and left his children to a Gower family. Seems like an interesting coicidence. I have seen thier names before as well, but I don't know much about them. I belive from my research that the father was a taylor.
I too am still digging. I will let you know if I run across anything new.

Debbie

Hello Marilyn,

Thankyou so much for the information! I don't know if I have all of what you shared. I have this week off, so I plan to go to the library, and will look up some of this infomation, and I will also look up information on Gower Whittemore. Hopefully I will come up with something we can both use.
Will keep you posted. By the way, you can always email me at dellis9@tampabay.rr.com
