Hi,
Spurr family I studing is Richard (Dick)Spurr born in Virginia. Children are: Lewis, Issac, Giles, Minerva, Grace,Mary. My line is Giles Spurr born abt. 1818 Tenn. Married Malinda Jane Tyler June 12, 1859 Parke Co., Rockville, Indiana. I have a book researched by Richard and wife Evelyn Spurr its a 100 pages on Spurr Genealogy. The children of Giles and Malinda are: Emma Amanda, William, Richard, Lewis, Mary, Nero, Phoebe, Charles, Burl, Rebecca. I would like to hear from anyone related to this family. I will even share what I have.
Parke Co., Indiana is where most of the children were born.

Angela,

This isn't a direct line for me but I am interested in a collateral line and any of the family members buried at North Union Cemetery in Jackson township - besides Giles and Malinda.

I have dates on Giles Thomas Spurr as born 30 Jan 1825 in TN, died 25 July 1901 in Parke County. Malinda was born 08 Nov 1834 in TN and died 10 Mar 1898 in Parke County.

I show Malinda's maiden name as Malinda Jane Smiley - that she was married to Samuel Tyler on 01 February 1851 in Parke County before marrying Giles in 1859. I think that is her mother Hannah Smiley living with the family on the 1860 census. I wonder if the oldest child Richard could have been Samuel's child but adopted by Giles since he was born before they were married?

Any corrections or additions you can add would be most welcome.

Jim

Hi,Jim
Glad to hear from you. Everything you have seems right. I'm glad to hear that Malinda's mother's name is Hannah, she also has a sister that name. Do you have much idea's on the Smiley side of the family? And the first I heard of Malinda being married to Samuel Tyler. The book I have researched by Richard and Evelyn Spurr didn't have anything on that. As for Richard Spurr Giles adopting him not sure. My direct line is Hiatt Spurr married to Mary Brown, Richard Spurr wife unknown, Giles and Malinda Spurr, Emma Amanda Spurr and husband James M. Smith, Martha Ellen Smith-Loveless. Would you happen to even know anything about Emma Amanda Spurr's husband James M. Smith? Do you have any orgin of where the Spurr family came from?

Angela,

Giles says he was born in Tennessee on all the census records. The census also state both his parentes were born in Virginia. He is living with Issac and Lewis Spurr on the 1860 and 1870 census - both born in Virginia and both old enough to be his father- but I've not researched the family out of Indiana.

I did a little research and I think James and Emma Amanda (Spurr) Smith are shown on the 1880 census for Clay Co., IN - Page 306b, VanBuren Township, Dwelling 332, Family 337. It lists James M. born Sep 1873, Emma A born Jan 1873, Otis - son - born Aug 1892, Roy - son - born Dec 1893, Rebecca A - dau - born Jun 1897, George L. - son - born Jan 1900 & Rebecca A. - mother - born March 1866. The birth year for the mother must be wrong and is more likely 1834 and her age 66. I say that because I find a Smith family on the 1880 census for VanBuren township listing Joe as the father age 47, Rebecca as the mother age 34, Lucinda age 10, Agnes age 8, James age 6, Geo age 6 and Minna age 5 months.
Since James and Emma named one of their daughters Rebecca - it seems like this could be him.

James and Emma appear to be in Vermillion county for the 1920 census and Vigo county for the 1920 census. I hope that helps.

Hi,
I came across your message in researching my father's heritage. My father was Owen Fredrick Drake, grandson of Burl Valentine Spurr who was the son of Giles and Malinda. I would love to share info and wanted to ask about the book you mentioned on Spurr Genealogy. Any way to get a copy? Also I just came across the photo that you posted of Giles and Malinda, thank you for sharing this , first time I have ever seen a picture of my great-great grandparents.
