I was hoping somebody knows what happened to the records of this group. My great grandfather was placed with them in 1864 at age 6. I believe he lived with a family or 2 in the midwest until he was 16. I would appreciate any info you might share.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post.
Rita

I have been doing a little research on this group. It seems that some of these records are in Rockland County, NY and that they were the basis of this book:

Heritage Quest Online; U.S.census records has records of persons in this orphanage.
PLEASE post here any person's name and I will look up and see if that person was recorded.
Heritage Qwest is free, and usually accessed thru a public library... and maybe at any LDS church, family history center.

My husband and I are serving as missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. We work in the Digital Preservation area and our job is to scan family history books to be prepared for digitizing and putting them on-line. We have just been working with a new donation: records from the early 1800's-forward from the AFGS of NY. It will be a couple of months, possibly, before they show up on-line but you can look for them on familysearch.org. Watch for the "books" tab. There are over 50,000 books from the library on-line so far. I do hope you will find your grandfather's records in what we've processed. Some of the "stories" seem so heartbreaking.

Ironically, it appears the husband of my distant cousin may have spent time there during his teen years as he shows up listed there in the 1930 census records. It would be wonderful if there were other records on him during the years that he stayed there.
