Could someone possibly answer two questions for me:
Does David Newsom (d. 18 Jan 1882) have a marked grave in Newsom Campground/Cemetery, and
was Nusom Road in North Howell named after David Newsom?
Many thanks.

Was David Newsom the father of Samuel J. Newsom who went to crook county in the 1870's?

Yes, my information shows that David Newsom had ten children, one of whom was Samuel J. Newsom, b. 13 Mar 1834. I know nothing more, however, about Samuel.
I only recently discovered that David Newsom was the brother of my g-g-g-grandfather, John Newsom, and I am therefore very interested in learning more about David's life in Oregon. Do you have further information on his son, Samuel?

Surnames: Newsom
From "Oregon Geographic Names", 6th Edition, by Lewis A. McArthur:

"Newsome Creek, Crook Countyy): Newsome Creek east of Post was named for Samuel J. Newsom who was born in Springfield, Illinois on Mar. 13, 1834 and came to Oregon with his parents, David and Mary Newsom, in 1851. Newsom lived in Marion County then moved to eastern Oregon in the 1870's. He was a prominent rancher in the vicinity of Post and later developed Newsom's Addition to the City of Prineville. The superfluous terminel 'e' is fixed by current usage. For a short biography, see 'Illustrated History of Central Oregon, p. 786."

Go to www.oregonpioneers.com and under the heading "Settling of Oregon and It's Pioneers" go to 1851. There is a researcher listed for the Newsom family. My McClure family came in 1851 also. Check out www.oregongenweb.org, then Crook Co. The Mrion county site is pretty worthless. Hopefully someone else here in Marion County will come up with some of the information you are looking for.

Nusom Road runs along the north edge of the Newsome properties. The spelling on the 1878 atlas was Newsome. Other documents give Newsom and other spellings.

I would be surprised if the road was named for anyone else.
