I have info re the Swiss ancestors of J.J. Auer in Hallau Switz (canton Schaffhausen), which I received from the Old Church Record Books there. J.J. was the half-brother of Adam Auer, who is my great grandfather; their father was Adam Auer b. 1805 in Hallau. I have written up an Auer history, which I would be happy to email you (my email address is baxter6268netzero.net). (I have more info re Adam's ancestors)

My Mom retired in Buffalo County (where she and my Dad were born) and she gathered genealogical info in the 1960's about the Auers. However, there are a few discrepancies! J.J. was baptized Johann Jacob b. 12 June 1849. 1866 to America. 1867 to Alma. Then, my notes say he lived in Durand, where he first owned a saloon and then became editor of a German newspaper. He married 6 Feb 1883, as you note...but I have a ? Knoell as a wife. It could be a misspelling of your wife's name.
They had a daughter Clara, a musician, who married "Paul Ellis", a dentist in Maquoleta, Iowa. Then, my Mom's notes say J.J. married a second time and had Frank, a lawyer, and Norman, who married Ida. She thought Norman and Ida had no children. She also thought Frank married Annabelle and they were killed in a car accident. Frank and Annabelle (Lelia??) had a son named Frank who also was a lawyer.

Perhaps J.J. only married once?? I will greatly appreciate any info you have...whether either of these Frank Auers were lawyers...Thanks for your help.

I am curious as to the wife of your Adam Auer. I am trying to find some information on the one who was married to Hannah Weisel. Actually, I am trying to find the parents of Laura C. Oyer (Auer) who was married to William R. Lewis. They lived inCarbon Co., Pa in 1910.

Barbara,
I also have a gggrandfather that came to U.S. from Switzerland in about 1847. He ended up in the St. Louis, Missouri area and is listed in the 1860 census there (Ward 7). From trying to read an entry from his diary, he was from "Ober Hallau Canton Shaffhous, Switzerland. Via Havre te Grace. He stated that he was coming to U.S. to visit relatives. He married a lady, Catherine Haltgraffer, who was from Germany and lived in St. Clair County, Illinois.
I have always wanted to try and find out something about his family but have never been able to make a connection. I would be interested in the history you have on the Auer family, if you would care to share it. I also would be glad to share any of what I have about John Jacob Auer and up to present time.
Thanks in advance,
Charlie Auer

Auer's home was across the street from my family in the 1940's. Unfortunately i don't remember any first names. 2 daughters born I suspect in the late 30's. and a Denny Auer , all I remember of Denny was he and my nephew, mike Duval trading and sorting out baseball cards. and I believe Denny may have gone to pharmacy school and attended the monteray language school while a soldier.
