The surname MEDIC, most likely derived from the
Croatian word med meaning honey and IC meaning son of, is very common in Croatia. Of the 256 arr at
Ellis Is from 1894 to 1924 the vast majority came from
Croatian parts of old Austro-Hungarian Empire. Of course this is prior to the time period you are searching.
Croatians arrived in the Americas as sailors on
Columbus' ships. They began settlement in early 1800s, mostly in Lousiana and other Gulf states as well as
California. These early immigrants mostly came from the Adriatic Coast region of Croaita, known as Dalmatia (birthplace of the famous Dalmatian dog breed). Today their descendents are responsible for found oyster fishing, Star
Kist Tuna,
Boskovich lettuce company and various other industries in CA and
LA. They began settlement in
Ohio around 1880s when their was a great migration of about 5,000,000 people to the US from Austro-Hungary this lasted until the outbreak of WW I, about 1913. Most of them went to Ohio's industrial centers;
Cleveland, Youngstown,
Lorain and Akron, with fewer going to Cincinnati,
Columbus,
Toledo and smaller coal mining and steel producing towns.
Perhaps, but not likely that Rebbeca and Milton are of
Croatian origins but Rebecca and Milton are not names that would be found among
Croatians.
