I am trying to fine out about the battle at Mazzard's Prairie which I think was some where near Ft, Smith. It took place in July of 1864.
My ggg-grandfather Calvin Jackson was shot at this battle and was in Co B, 6 KS Cav.
Can anyone tell me about the battle or point the way to a book that would give detales.

Donna ~ Question, How is the Prairie located near Ft. Smith Ar. spelled? Just curious since I lived there a long time and remembered it as Massard's Prairie after associating it with a cutoff road we took often in the 80s called Massard Rd. Assumed this was in the same location but never had anyone tell me this. Thanks. Glynda Ellman

Mazzard Prairie Battlefield is being established as a civil war site park. It is located behind the Hiram Walker Brewing Company in Fort Smith. The sign is in the Millenium Housing Development. Right now it is just a bunch of weeds. Nothing has been done. The original historical marker is off Highway 71, 3 or 4 miles south of Fort Smith on Highway 45. An amateur historian Steven Cox is responsible for moving the designated area northeast a few miles. I am investigating the name now for a school history. All of the old records have Mazzard. There were two schools on the Prairie -- Mazzard to the east and Massard (later Maness) to the west. In the article on Steven Cox (Southwest Times Record, January 9, 2000, p.1) He said he had done extensive research and thought the name was spelled Massard, but the sign to the "park" says Mazzard. Let me know if you find anything.

I'm working on FORD - HENDRICKS/HENDRIX - SHEPARD - CHAPLIN lines in Sebastian County, AR. and even more so on my Fords in Benton and Washington County AR. I notice you have MOODY listed and this brings a puzzle to my mind about my Hendricks line. My great-great was living in the home of a MOODY in 1880 census of Sebastian County Ar. with her 2 Hendricks children, Sugarloaf or Mississippi township. Not remembering his name now but remember he had a son ANDREW in home. My Nancy Hendricks Collins was born in ca.1830/32 and this ? Moody man, widowed, was a few years older. Will look this up in my genalogy program if you think we might have a connection?
I've been to Massard's Prairie location lots of time because my daughter lives off Rogers Ave. & 66th in Ft. Smith. That area is really changing there but they still have Massard Road there right? Glynda/TX

Jim ~ Did you ask me a question on Massard's Prairie? I'm not sure but I received this as a message had been posted to mine. Maybe because I had replied to original requester on location of Massard's Prairie? Anyway, let me know if there's anything I can send to you.
