Welch connection?

This is a real shot in the dark. My grandmother was Helen Anna Welch born in Burlington, Iowa in 1894. There are several interesting things here. I was born in Council Bluffs in 1948. Also, given the propensity of my Welches to use endless variations on the same names from generation to generation your Anna Helen jumped out at me. I also understand, though have not as yet confirmed, that her parents were from Ireland. Could there be a distant connection here?

Grandfather was Willie Welch

Welch's in Iowa

Hi! My husband's family originated in Iowa under rather strange circumstances. We can trace back to James Edward Welch born to Adelphia Aversa Mattox around the 1870's. Adelphia ran away from the family farm in Mahaska Co. near Fremont when she was about 16. She returned home with an infant son and told her father, James R. Mattox that the boy's father's name was Welch. She said that she had had twins; she kept one and the father kept the other. James Edward was given the surname Welch and that is the line my husband descended from. James Edward married Mary Martin in 1897 in Oskaloosa, IA. They had three sons, John Riley, (my husband's father), Ray, and Homer who have all passed away. They were raised on the same family farm as James Edward. As you can guess, we have reached a dead end in trying to trace James's father. Does this story ring a bell to you or anyone in your family? If so, please contact me at bw1120@yahoo.com I would be glad to share any other information I have. Thank You! Barb Welch

Thanks so much for your note. What a coincedence about the names. I do know that all three men traveled a good deal helping out other farmers with putting up hay, etc. Wouldn't it be great if there was a connection of some sort. If I run accross anything about Willie Welch, I sure let you know. I will appreciate getting those other addresses. Thanks again. Barb Welch

Hi Barb
My husbands great grandfather was John Allen Welch of sidney ohio I cant find a thing on him and the family says its all a big mystery. Would your twin that stayed with the mother have been born in 1858?

As far as I know, the child that stayed with his mother (James Edward Welch) was born Oct. 8, 1875 according to the records we have.

Not for sure, but did William Moran have a brother named Patrick? If so, Patrick was my great-grandfather.
