1880 Virginia Census


If anyone has the time to help, I am looking for a family.
I have looked myself. They are either not on it or the last name has been transcribed inncorrectly.

Full name of people( i find them using first and middle combinations on various other documents)

Surname Sorrel

Joseph Edward Sorrel born about March 1823 Virginia
Mary Elizabeth/Elizabeth May born about November 1844 Virginia
Child
Mary Francis born August 1877

* They had Child born in 1881 Virginia Nancy Sorrel.

I have been unable to find either births of the children or the marriage of Joseph Sorrel and Mary McClure

Interested in finding what race they are. I was told Indian but have found no proof.

Possible county's
Clifton( according to Death cert. of Mary Francis)

Fincastle District(Gala,Glen Wilton and LIck Run Prestinct) Botetourt Virginia(1900 Census)

Sorrel,Sorrell,Sorrells,Sorrels,Sorells......

Story/info for anyone thats interested.
I have looked at that Marriage many times,and keep coming back to it. On the full information, it says they race of the bride and groom is Black. I really think its them, but have no proof.
This could very well be possible.

I have talked to two great-great grandaughters one from Virginia Nancy and the other descends from Mary Francis. They never have spoken or met. They both told me that there heritage was Indian. They both were told this growing up.
No one has proof though. Have found nothing.

The two census you found is not them, but may help someone else.

Edward Joseph and Mary Elizabeth only had 2 girls.

My grandmother maiden name was sorrell and she was from the covington, virginia area. I was always told that her mother granny was indian. I am interested in following up on your article.
