I have been able to trace my family in the Edgefield District of South Carolina back to John Salter (1786-1859) and Hannah Eidson (1824- ). I am interested in ancestors of this specific John Salter; when this branch of the Salters first arrived in the Edgefield District; their possible relationship to the various James Salters and their European origins. I will be glad to furnish any information I have on the Salters or Sheppards, in whom I am also interested. I can trace the Sheppard link back to James Sheppard ( - 1771) and Janette Riddle ( -1820). I am also very interested in information on the family of Jesse Zebulon Salter (1850-1910), my ggrandfather.
I look forward to responses.

I am new at this so I don't have much yet. My information on Salter history only goes back to William R. Salter of Saluda County, SC. I don't know exact dates of birth or death, but he fought in the Civil War and died in the battle of Franklin, TN in December 1864. He was married to Harriet Webb (3/17/1823 - 7/16/1909) and had five children. I'm interested in tracing this line further. I wonder if our Saluda County Salter's are connected.

Your query sure piqued my interest!! My gggrandfather, James D.B.Salter had a brother John Webb Davey Salter, born 14 Sep 1786, Tiverton, England, who died in Pineville, South Carolina, 8 Sep 1814. I've found no additional info on him. If this is the same John Salter, I'd love to correspond with you.

My father and I are seeking information on the parents of his ggfather, Lemuel Salter, born 1850 Edgefield District. Lemuel married Grace Denning, the daughter of the Augusta postmaster, originally from Maine. We have lots of info on that side through the DAR, but we do not know who Lemuel's parents were. We suspect there is some connection with John Salter/Hannah Eidson as some relatives were given the middle name Eidson. Have you found a complete list of the children of the John Salter-Hannah Eidson marriage? Would so appreciate knowing where to find this info!

Dear Susan-
Your message slipped by me for awhile but I am very interested in the Edgefield Salters. I have a reasonably complete Salter geneology back to, I believe, the John Salter you reference but have been unable to make the link between those Salters in the Edgefield District and who came over from where in England. I would also be interested in sharing any of my information with you and in your information on Edgefield Salters.
Thanks very much,
John F. Salter
