My grandparents were born in cheb, czechoslovakia in 1864. They were moved to bukow (bukovina) and came to America from there. Stefan Wyda, and Mary Stock Wyda, came to the U.S. in 1882 and setteled in Pennsylvania. I would greatly appreciate any information, documentation that may be available. Censes records show the CZ, Hungary, Austria, and Bukow as homes of record. They were married before coming to the states, so a marriage record, pass port, parents names and maybe locations. Any information will be grateful...Thank you....Bob

PS Names vary Wida, Wayda, Wyda, Vajda, Vayda, were used..

You might want to post on Bohemia's and Czech Republic's board. I bit unusual to see a first name Stefan coming out of historical region Bohemia.
No W in Czech alphabet so most likely your Wida/Wayda/Wyda is VAJDA [Vayda] The English Y is a J sound.
Did not find a phone listing for VAJDA in Cheb but there are the 98 listings for VAJDA that are in CZ's phone book.

What religion were your ancestors?
Do you have a document that says they were born in Cheb? What was language of your ancestors?

Since they married before coming to America than most likely the villages were within 10 miles radius.
Stefan WYDA [VAJDA} was born or lived in
Šiba [šariš]
1773, 1863–1902 Siba, 1786 Schiba, 1808 Siba, Ssiba, 1907–1913 Szekcsőalja, 1920– Šiba, Slovak Republic

STOCH could very well have been STACH in old country as that spelling shows up in area code 054 {Bardejov} The village of Hertnik is listing few STACHs.
Hertník
1773 Hertnek, Hertnecht, 1786 Hertnek, 1808 Hertnek, Hertník, 1863–1913 Hertnek, 1920 Heretník, 1927– Hertník, SK

My maiden name is Vayda and I am from Western Ukraine, which was part of Austra-Hungarian empire. My fraternal grandfather, Albert Vayda, is from Bukowina. My grandmother told me that some of his relatives left for the States. However, I don't have the dates and names. Maybe we have something in common. email me to gmail at khristinav

I think this is your query on www.iarelative.com

I am serching for my grandfather and his parents. While he came to the US in 1882, He used the name Wyda, stating he was born in Cheb, CZ. and his real name was Grohal, (told to me by his daughter & My Father), or a variation of that name. Born in 1863/1864. He was married to Mary Stock, unknown birth place, but born in the same year, The story goes that the Wyda's adopted him aboard ship. From what I understand. that is not a possibility. It appears that they lived in bukow prior to immegrating to the United States. Thanks for your help...Bob

If your ancestors were Byzantine Catholic [Ruthenian] than they were most likely from eastern region of Slovakia.

GROHAL no such in Slovakia but a GROHAL and ROHAL found in eastern region of Slovakia.
Did find several GROHALs arriving NY EL
Grohal, Andras US 20 1887 1907
Grohal, Andras Irubino 16 1889 1905
Grohal, Eva Bilovcza, Slovakia 30 1890 1920
Grohal, Franciszek Gromiec, Galicia 27 1883 1910
Grohal, Franz Krentz, Austria 27 1886 1913
Grohal, George 26 1897 1923
Grohal, Jakob Tchirus, Germany 21 1892 1913
Grohal, Jan Richwald 16 1889 1905
Grohal, Josef Bilovcza, Slovakia 12 1908 1920
Grohal, Josefa Gronca, Austria 4 1909 1913
Grohal, Marya Gronca, Austria 30 1883 1913
Grohal, Stanislaw Gronca, Austria 2 1911 1913

Take a listen to a pronounciation http://say.expressivo.com Use Polish voice as it might be closes to pronounciation.

To: Zbeca,

Thank you for your responce. I think you sent something to me several months ago. This information I already have.
I am specifically looking for relatives from Cheb,CZ.
Not Slovakia, I must concentrate on Cheb,Cz., because that is the only hard evidence that I have. If no records are there than,my search is over.

Thanks

Bob

You're welcome Robert. Thanks for remembering that we corresponded before but I still have my doubts about your ancestor being from present Cheb, Czech Republic. I am sure you looked where it is on the map.
Please show me a document that has the location Cheb on it.
Did your Stefan or Mary called themselves Bohemian?
What religion were they? I am not convinced your research is in Cheb, Czech Republic and thus I would be sending you on a wild goose chase.
