Sharon,

Thomas Drover is a family name. I do not have one around 1861 though. But that doesn't mean there isn't a connection. I still have some loose ends on the family tree.

My gggg-grandfather Joseph Drover born in 1810 had a brother William Drover born in 1814 in Upper Island Cove. The Drove family was from that area. Some moved to Spaniards Bay.

I do not know William Drover's (1814) family line. That would probably where your Thomas comes in at if there is a connection. Would you have more on Thomas Drover 1861? I might be able to come up with something. Let me know,

Kaylene

Hi Raylene,

Don't know if you remember me, however, we have corresponded before regarding your Smith family. I've got a question for you regarding the Drover family. My ggrandmother was Rachel Drover, she married John Ingram Smith of Bishop's Cove. I know that Rachel Drover's father's name was James Drover and that he lived in Bishop's Cove - he appears in the 1847 census for Bishop's Cove, but not before. I'm guessing that he moved from Upper Island Cove to Bishop's Cove sometime between 1832 and 1847 since there are no Drovers in Bishop's Cove in the 1832 census. I know that my ggrandmother was born in Bishop's Cove in 1852/53 and I think she may have had a brother by the name of Josiah. Do you have any information on this line of the Drover family? Thanks Judy Parab

Judy,

Hi, I do remember you. Actually I do have a few James Drover's in my family tree going way back. Do you happen to have James Drover's date of birth?
I do not have a Josiah, but found that name in some of my research and wondered if there was relation. The Drover's were from Upper Island Cove and moved to the Bishop Cove area. But there are some family branches I do not have yet.
So if James Drover's birth date matches one of mine we might be on the right track. Or if you would like some of my Drover info to see if there may be a connection that would be fine too. Mine starts with a Henry and Rebecca Drover from 1590 in England.
Anyway let me know,

Kaylene

Hi, Kaylene;

I have a fair amount of information on DROVER (from Upper Island Cove, I'm told) that might fit in with your info if you're interested. These people came to settle in Hodge's Cove, Trinity Bay. Actually, there are several lines, which might be the same ones if extended back far enough.
One is of a James Drover (b. c. 1830) who married a Mary Mayo (b. c. 1840).
Another is a James Drover (b. c. 1837) who married a Martha ?? (b. ?)
Another is a John Drover (b. c. 1825) spouse unknown, but who is said to have died and/or been buried in Topsail, Conception Bay.
Yet another is a James Drover (b. ?), spouse unknown, but who had a daughter Barbara born in Hodge's Cove October 19, 1866.

Do any of these fit into your 'tree'? I'd love to share notes if we have something mutually beneficial.

Regards,
Eric Stringer

Hi Kaylene,

Sorry, I don't have a date for James Drover, all I know about the Drover family is that he is listed as Rachel Drover's father in the marriage information. I don't even know Rachel's mother's name. My father says he remembers his mother (Rachel's daughter) talking about a "long house" in Upper Island Cove. My dad thought that was where Rachel was born, but according to the marriage certificate information she was born in Bishop's Cove. So I'm thinking that it's possible this is actually where James Drover lived in Upper Island Cove, before moving to Bishop's Cove. Apparently there were two families who lived in the house. In other words I think the house was two houses connected.
