Looking for information concerning the RAWLINGS family (Michael, Ezekiel, Gatewood, etc.) who lived in or around Jo Daviess County, IL in the mid-1800's (1830's-1860's) This family is not to be confused witht he Rawlins family that was prominent in JoDaviess County, IL, though in some records, the name may have been spelled the same.

Michael died in 1850, his brother Ezekiel had apparently lived in JoDaviess County shortly after the 1832 Black Hawk War, and another brother, Gatewood, married in Grant County, WI, just north of JoDaviess County.

Any information is welcomed.

The will of Moses Porter names "...my friend E. Rawlings" as executor of his will. The will was recorded Feb 8, 1854 in Carroll Co. IL.. On Aug 27, 1867 there was a citation issued to Ezekiel Rawlings to "Show cause for neglect of duty." concerning this will. In 1846 the Porters (at least Moses' daughter Lavinia) were in Pleasant Valley Twp., JoDaviess Co. IL.

As far as I know I am not related to the Rawlings but I thought this might be of interest to you.

Lavinia Porter married Joseph Thompson of Pleasant Valley. They are my gggrandparents.

Suzanne,
Harriet Porter listed as a daughter of Moses Porter in his will, married Edward Hickey in1843-Fulton Co, IL. They were living in Jo Daviess Co until 1869 when Edward sold his land & moved to Fremont Co, Ia. Later, Edward at least returned to Canton, Fulton Co IL and died there abt 1894. His probaate says some of his children were living in IL, NE, IA and WA State. Harriet Porter Hickey is supposed to have died in 1906/07 in WaState. Harriet Porter Hickey was the mother of Nathaniel Hickey who was my mother's grandfather. Harriet also had a son Isaac Newton Hickey. I have wondered if Newton was a family name.

So, have you figured out who Ezekiel Rawlings is? I wondered if it might have been a brother of Mrs Moses Porter?

Mary

Mary,

Thanks for all the information! We are still trying to find out if Ezekiel Rawlings was related or just a friend. Your idea of him being a brother to Mrs. Moses Porter is interesting and is worth looking into. We have been unable to go any farther back than Moses Porter. Let me know if you have any success.

I have info for the families of Michael Rawlings and Mary Thompson. Alexander McCain and Susanna Rawlings.
William Jacob Harvey and Mary Melinda McCain. The Rawlings name is often misspelled as Rollins, Rawlins, Rollings, etc... by census takers in 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870. But by the 1880's they finaly start to get it right. And the Illinois Marriage records for Jo Daviess and Carroll Co.'s usally get it as Rawlings for Michaels 8 children. Also the parents of Mary Thompson were Joseph and Isabella. Often misspelled as Thomson in census records.

Suzanne,

If you are still out there I would like to correspond with you about our mutual line of "Porter". I descend through Harriet Porter who married Edward Hickey/Haacke

I was recently in both Jo Daviess and Carroll county doing research looking for death dates for Moses and Hannah Wertman Porter and came up empty handed. Would like to know where they might be buried???

Mary
