Would like any information you may have. My Samantha was b about 1866 or 1868 in NC. Mother, according to family verbal history was Margaret "May" "Peggy" Henderson/Henson/Hendson. She was age 34, and listed as the concubine of John Smith (age 55) in the 1880 Spartanburg, SC Census. There was a 'servant' named "Amanda" age 12 and a boy named Rufus age 10 in the household and a son, John Smith age 1. In the 1900 Census, May is a widow, married in 1895, says she has had 5 children, 4 still living. I believe Ida, in the 1900 Census is possibly the illegitemate child of Samantha, not the child of 'May'. Ideas????

I have not been able to find any thing before 1880.Hoping to find information on her before 1880. As far ida goes ,she is listed as a Kirby on her obit.

Re: Benton and Samantha Henson Kirby of Spartanburg SC
These are some notes I have compiled over a period of time, some are not 'documented'.
Peggie Phillips is listed on the death certificate of Samantha, however, it appears this was a made up name.
May have had Rufus and Samantha while unmarried. Was also supposed to be married to a John Smith and had second son, John Smith. Rufus and Samantha's father may have been a "Champion". No proof of any of this. Can't remember where I got this information, but it was someone related I spoke with on email. Should have kept better notes. :(
On the 1880 Spartanburg SCCensus, "May Henderson" was listed as "Conc", not wife, which I suppose is concubine. This was a term that census takers gave to prostitutes, among others. Amanda and Rufus Henderson were listed as "servant" at 12 and 10 yrs of age.
Family stories handed down say that Maggie or "May" was a cherokee indian.
In the 1900 census, she ("Margaret Smith") is listed as the mother of Rufus Smith. Rufus is the head of the house, age 26 and single. He has a 17 year old brother named Johnnie, a niece Ida age 14 and a sister Sara Henson age 41 and single. Margaret is listed as a widow, married 5 years prior. She is also listed as the mother of 5 children, only 4 still living.
I believe the niece, Ida, is the illegitemate child of Margarets daughter, Samantha (Amanda). I don't think Sara Henson is Margarets daughter, as Margaret was born in 1851 and Sara in 1858. Possibly a step child or half sister.
