Searching for Huggins surname in St. Vincent. Letitia Huggins was married to Dr. John Melville in 1822 in St. Georges Cathedral. Her father was James Huggins who was probably a doctor.

Thank you for answering, I have been searching for information in St. Vincent but couldn't find where to search. The information I have comes from a Melville diary of Dr. John Melville's brother Captain Robert Melville. It only says her name and date of their marriage and the name of their children. Do you have information on Letitia Huggins or her family?

Message for Evelyn Schwank Melville

Dear Evelyn

I am very happy to help. Letitia Huggins, born 2.6.1788, died 29.10.1858, was one of the daughters of James Huggins, born 23.5.1752, d. 3.12.1837, and Mary Evans. In fact they had 21 children in all, though sadly six were still born.

James had been the Provost Marshall of Nevis, but moved to St Vincent around the 1780s. I have given a little more details of him and his background on http://www.silvertorch.com/jottings/stvijots.html

If you are able to give me a postal address I will photocopy the family tree and post it on to you. The family tree goes back as far as James's great-grandfather, Robert Huggins 1647-1707. Family legends say that he was the son of a young Royalist officer who fled England after the battle of Naseby in 1645. The battle list of officers records an ensign called Robert Haggines - this could be the man, rather than Col. Sir Thomas Huggins who fought on Cromwell's side.
You have added some vwery valuable information for us - the details of Letitia's marriage.

I am writing from England, but will be working in the far east of Russia from 11th Feb until the 25th March.

With kindest regards

Michael Huggins

Evelyn,
Do you have any information on Georgianna Ann Melville? She was born in 1821 and married Reverend Horatio W. Laborde on Dec 4, 1845. I'm thinking they got married in St Vincent. The Reverend was the archdeacon of St George's Cathedral. The Reverend was appointed Member of the St Vincent Legislative Council on 14 April 1866. This announcement appeared in the London Gazette on 17 April 1866.
I don't know how many children he and Marion had but I do know that they had at least two daughters, one who was named Marion Jane Clement born on Sept 12, 1853.

Marion went on to marry John Gregg Windsor Hazell in 1870, who was also a member of the Legislative Council some thirty years later in 1905.

Hi Shawn:

I believe that you and I have common relations on the "Bullock," side of the family. Are you checking on the Indian descendent "Huggins"? I have some info on the Georgetown Huggins (formerly of Argyle and Grand Sable).

Keep up the good work you have been doing.

Yours in Ancestry research

Hi Brian:

Thanks for the great information you provided. You were a great help. I am a descendent of the Huggins of Trinidad and Grenada, originally from Scotland, via the Lougheed and Huggins clans. A number of families were also named after this "Huggins" who came to St. Vincent from Scotland via Nevis and Trinidad. Your notes were quite useful. I have some little information of the Huggins family coat of arms, etc. Need to find out more, especially the family's name and exploits in Scotland, Ulster, etc. Currently doing pre-Roman history of Scotland and Ireland.

Yours in our Genealogical research
