Message for Evelyn Schwank Melville
Dear Evelyn
I am very happy to help. Letitia Huggins, born 2.6.1788, died 29.10.1858, was one of the daughters of James Huggins, born 23.5.1752, d. 3.12.1837, and Mary Evans. In fact they had 21 children in all, though sadly six were still born.
James had been the Provost Marshall of Nevis, but moved to St Vincent around the 1780s. I have given a little more details of him and his background on
http://www.silvertorch.com/jottings/stvijots.html If you are able to give me a postal address I will photocopy the family tree and post it on to you. The family tree goes back as far as James's great-grandfather, Robert Huggins 1647-1707. Family legends say that he was the son of a young Royalist officer who fled England after the battle of Naseby in 1645. The battle list of officers records an ensign called Robert Haggines - this could be the man, rather than Col. Sir Thomas Huggins who fought on Cromwell's side.
You have added some vwery valuable information for us - the details of Letitia's marriage.
I am writing from England, but will be working in the far east of Russia from 11th Feb until the 25th March.
With kindest regards
Michael Huggins
