Gaard Family

My ancestors came from Talgje Island. My gg grandparents were Ole Andersen Gaard and Berta Olsdatter Hoyland. One of their sons(Bertal) came to Ruthven, Iowa. Two other sons came to the Story County, Iowa area - Ole Olsen (my g grandfather) and Andreas (Andrew in America). Children of other brothers (Nils and Andreanus) also came to America and setteled in SD. Some of them were near Arlington, SD. I am interested in family history and would be willing to correspond with anyone with an interest in this branch of the family. Tom Gaard

I'm also researching Gaard's from the Island of Talgje. Mine originated with Sjur Larson and Ingeborg Oddsdatter but information from family members suggest there may have been a marriage between Anders, son of Anders and Sarah Haanda, and Elen Marie, daughter of Sjur and Ingeborg. The children were Ingeborg and Serena. Ana Serena married Tormud Ovrehus and they remained on the farm. Does any of this intersect with your research?

Your family would have lived on a near-by farm but I could not find any immediate relationship altho it is likely we could find one if we go back far enough. According to the bygdebok (farm book) for Finnoy, they list a history of each farm. Elen Marie, the daughter of Sjur and Ingeborg, married Anders Anderson and they operated the farm from 1892 until 1910. The parents of Anders were Anders Olson and Siri Torbjornsdtr Hovda (Sarah Haanda ?). One of the daughters, Ingeborg, marrried Elling Enevald Kjolvik and they operated the farm from 1910 to 1967. While Ane Serina married Tormud Overhus, it does not show them on the farm. The bygdebok has other info but written in Norwegian which I can't translate very well. Let me know if you have additional questions.

It sounds like your Gaards were a different family, also form the Island of Talgje. I have the bygdebok pages for Talgje which describe the history of the ownership of the farm and the names of each owner, their wife or wives and their children. Unfortunately it is all in Norwegian which I can sort of decode but can't fully translate. There is a record of Rasmus Endreson 1848-cira 1860. He was first married to Kristine Nilsdatter; then to Marta Halvorsdatter. With Kristine he had Kristine (1843-1860) and Nille (1831-?). It looks like she had a daughter Olava in 1851 with bachelor Ola Andersson Gard. Nille subsequently married Hermann Osmundson and moved to Ammerica. There is a page reference to further information about Ola Andersson Gard, but I don't have that page. I'll see if I can get it from my source. Rasmus dies in 1860. That is the year that my great-great-grandfather Sjur Larson, took over the farm. All but one of his children emigrated and they took the surname Gaard about 1875. Gaard, of course, seems to have been taken by anyone who was a farmer in that area since in Norewegian a gard is a farm, although they also seem to use bruke.

I must have really confused you. I'm new to the message board and I actually re-read your original post rather than your recent message when I replied. So I was telling you things you already knew. My aplogies.

I also had a piece of misinformation in my original message. Ane Serina and Tormud lived in Fister, Hjelmeland. I have the pages for them as well. The sister Ingeborg married took over the farm and then sold to Einar Steinsland in 1984. I've been in touch with the Steinslands and hope to visit the farm when I'm in Norway this spring.

It was Rakel who married Tollack Knutson. It appears they had a nearby farm from 1867 to 1874 when they emigrated and sold their land to Lars Larson. I think this Lars may be a brother of Sjur but I'm still tryint to find more information.

Thats great that you are visiting Norway. I visited Talgje Island in 1989. I had no contact beforehand but left my name and address and family history information with some folks. After I returned home, I heard from Nils Gard who sent a good deal of family history information. I also noticed that he was named in the bygdebok as a contributor. If you go to Talgje, see the old church on top of the hill. They told me it was built in about 1150. There are headstones around the church grounds. You will also see greenhouses and I understand this is operated by my relatives in the Gaard/Gard family. Talgje is a very pretty and remote place. Have a great trip!

I do have some additional information. My great-grandfather was Rakel's younger brother, Sivert. The parents of Rakel, Sivert and their siblings were Sjur Larsson and Ingeborg Oddsdatter. Sjur was originally from further north and had moved south, presumably looking for better economic opportunities. He married Ingeborg in Hetland where their first three children were born: Elen Marie, Rakel Severine and Jonas. In 1851 they moved to Rennesoy where the remainder of the children were born: Lena, Anna Gurina, twins Sivert and Johan, and Lauritz. In 1860 they moved to the Island of Talgje. It was from that location that six of the siblings emigrated.

Anna Gurina died at about age 18. Of the remaining siblings only Elen Marie remained in Norway. She stayed on the family farm with her husband Anders Andersson. They had two daughters. Ingeborg married Elling Kjolvik and stayed on the farm. Ane Serina married Tormod Ovrehus and moved to Fister. I have details of all of the descendants of Tormud and Ane Serina down to the present day. I was lucky enough to be in contact with a great-grandson and a great-great granddaughter when I travelled to Norway in the spring. They gave me some information on the antecedents of Anna Serina through Elen Marie and Ingeborg Oddsdatter. it was in Norwegian and I'm working on getting it translated.

Ingeborg Oddsdatter died about the time the family moved to Talge. Sjur married Anna Marta Eriksdatter sometime between the 1865 and 1875 censuses. She had become the family housekeeper after the death of Sjur's first wife.

I hope this helps. I've found several descendants of the Gaard siblings in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. I plan to visit there this summer and hope to learn more about the family from them.

I hope this helps.
