Swedish Obituaries

Hello, I am trying to learn more about the lives of my great-great grandparents and their children, most of whom lived in and around Engelholm. My great-grandparents were Johan Lauritz Hansson (d. 1914) and Anna Thorsson (d. 1929). Were obituaries common at that time, and if so, how would I go about looking for them?
Thank you,
Prentiss

I don't think that ordinary people had obituaries which would be useful. You can learn MUCH more from the parish records and from the estate inventories.

Too bad you didn't tell us when these people were born.

Could this be your "Johan Lauritz Hansson"?

Most Swedes did not get obituaries in the newspapers, just a short death notice.

Here is a death notice from 2012, scroll down to see more of them:

Thank you Judy for all this information. My great-grandfather was Kristian Hansson, who came to the United States, which is why you didn't find him in the death index. I am still trying to create more of a narrative around his family that remained in Sweden, and perhaps the only good way to do that is to make contact with living relatives. How does one go about learning of Kristian's nephews and nieces that lived and died in Sweden, and from there find out about any living relatives? I have already found many of them with ancestry's birth index 1880-1920, but this doesn't allow for finding information on people born after 1920 or who are still alive.
Thank you

You can find a great deal of information using the Swedish parish records. They are online, for a fee, on these sites. (Ancestry.com's world edition also has scanned Swedish parish records, but if you aren't already subscribed, the other services are much better.)

http://www.genline.com

http://www.svar.ra.se

http://www.arkivdigital.net

The records are not going to be indexed. The scans are from the parish books used by the ministers. You already have enough information to get started, however. ;-)

I suggest that you obtain the bouppteckningar (estate inventories) for the people found on the death index. Those will name living children at the time of their death. Then ask for lookups for any additional children you find in the parish records. Eventually you will get to generations which are likely to be still alive. At that point, ask for lookups on the cds for 1870, 1980, and 1990. The information from those cds will allow you to use the online sources which provide addresses, etc.

There are birth, marriage, and death records available online (unindexed by name, of course) on SVAR and Genline (and presumably the world version of Ancestry.com. Arkiv Digital tends to scan the original records and the other services do that too, but the b/m/d records are extractions from the original records sent to Stockholm for statistical purposes.

The services have many of the same records but they also have records not available on the other services. You should make sure the parishes you need and the time periods you need are scanned by a particular service before you join.

This tells about the estate inventories.

The last decade or two of the 19th century and well into the 1950's and 1960's was the golden age of obituaries for "anyone" - but not in the big, national papers or even regional papers. Obituaries and reports from funerals were instead big items in small local papers.
These small local papers have been microfilmed, but not digitized nor indexed. The microfilms are available at s few large university research libraries but also quite often at the local library in question (they often have a "genealogy corner" and/or a "local interest corner").

You can email the library in Ängelholm at biblinfo@engelholm.se

They should have the local papers from way back when, and they may be willing to locate information and email it to you. I doubt they will translate for you, but you can just post it here and I'm sure everyone will help you out with that.
