I've been searching for great grandparents in Sweden and have reached a dead end. My GGF name was Nils Magnus Wallin, he was married to Emma Svensdotter (or Hakanson). They had three daughters, Maria Elisabet, Hanna Magdalena, and Emma Amalia.

All children were born in Ransater, Varmland, Sweden.

And would someone be able to explain why, on Ancestry, I can search for Emma Hakanson and it will show up but below that name it will say (Emma Svensdotter) in parenthesis? It's confusing. On the children's records it shows her mother as being Emma Svensdotter.

Most of the databases that I've been trying to search outside of Ancestry are all in Swedish so it's been difficult finding info.

Any help I can get would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Well, if it confuses you and you are looking at the record, think how confusing it is to us. Most of the people who might help you on this board are not subscribed to the world version of Ancestry.com. (We are instead subscribed to Genline and/or SVAR and/or Arkiv Digital.)

Provide more of a context for your confusion and maybe we will be able to help out.

Of course the scanned Swedish records are going to be in Swedish (since that is the language spoken by our ancestors), but those are the best records to use. The records were written in a set pattern, for the most part, and it doesn't take long to learn a few Swedish words. Most of the people researching in Swedish records who are not native Swedish speakers, such as myself, are able to find HUGE amounts of information in the Swedish records. You will be severely limiting what you will learn about your ancestors if you avoid the original Swedish records.

Thank you very much for your help. I was working on gathering the birth dates/years for the family and by the time I had them gathered you'd already found info.

I have learned a few swedish words, and I did print out a dictionary with geneology type swedish to english translations to help me out. I guess when I open a database and it looks so daunting. I'll get better at it. And thank you again.
