Russ,
I can't answer your direct question, but I have read from the book, "History of
Clay and
Platte Counties". The year of 1864 was a particular bloody one in
Clay. With citizens split between Union and Confederates, there were alot of hatred between neighbor and even within families. But most of the bushwackers, as they were called, came from
Kansas. It tells of many murders night and day. Some were killed for revenge of one of thier side being killed by that family and some were killed for have currency from the other side.
They had many names such as
Kansas jayhawkers, bushwackers, guerrillas, etc. They had many Confederate sympathizers in the county that kept them fed and housed. Property was taken and destroyed, business robbed, and men were killed in from of their wives and children. So Mr. Norris could have been one of the many.
