CYRUS Family Store - in Dayton or Covello, WA before 1900?

Surnames: CYRUS, KUHN
I have inherited a ledger from the store kept by members of the CYRUS family in Columbia County, Washington.

I would like to learn some background information about the store, in hopes of publishing an account and some images from the ledger to the Internet. If I could tie it to photographs or advertisements that would be great, too.

I have seen a picture of a child sitting in this store. The child was identified as Charlotte Pearl CYRUS, b. 1902 to Norman CYRUS and Leo Helen KUHN. The KUHN family were also early settlers in the area. At this time I do not know if Norman CYRUS himself ran the store.

Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

This is my husband's family. His grandmother is a Cyrus. Do you still have this ledger? We would like to purchase it from you. My husband and I are the family historians for this family.

Please email me at treehstn@webbergroup.com

Thanks!

Hello, if your husband is a CYRUS descendant, then we are likely related, as my grandmother was a CYRUS by birth as well. Which CYRUS was his grandmother? All from that generation in our line are deceased.

The ledger is not for sale, but if you advise who you are interested in, I can check it for relevant information. A typical entry will have a name at the top of the page, and then what items were purchased and the cost of each. If someone paid their account in goods, then that is shown as well. There is no genealogical information included per se, but the items purchased would help provide context. Full dates are lacking. The ledger is oversized, and not in great condition because of mold.

I am still trying to establish the facts re: the existence of the store, as the ledger is undated as far as I can tell. Since the photo (separate from the ledger) dates to about 1903, I am guessing the store was in operation around that time. I believe it was Norman CYRUS, my g-grandfather, who ran the store in or near Covello, although the census for 1900 and 1910 does not indicate that as an occupation for him.

Please let me know if you have any details about the store itself. Thank you.

Dawn,

Since we are talking about living relatives I'd rather not post that info here. Could you email me privately? We'd love to get copies of the picture and any of the ledger sheets that might be related. Norman Cyrus is my husband's grandmother's uncle. She is still living.

Thanks,

cheryl

I found the information on the store. I have copies of the book that it was listed in and can email them to you. It is a genealogical register of the family with their history.

Is there by any chance a mention of any Rinehart families in this book?

The book that I have is "The Mulkeys in America" by Philip Mulkey Hunt. It was privately printed. I don't see any Rinehart's in the index using any spelling variation. Sorry!

Thanks so very much for looking! The Rinehart brothers were in Dayton and Covello from about 1884 for many years so it was a possibility.

Thanks again.

I have the entire history of the community of Covello and it's outlying areas complete with a pretty indepth genealogy of those early pioneers/settlers. The source is a book written by Ward Rinehart, son of Mike and Molly Rinehart, grandson of Sam English and Lizzie Paul.

My connection comes through the Paul side. My interest in Covello comes from researching a Scots Irish family clan as they tediously migrated through the eastern states and then gradually through the generations westward until a final journey over the Oregon trail in 1862 when 'Western' fever and gold discoveries became too much of a lure to many of the farmers and businessmen.

Ward Rinehart's book covers the westward migrations of several of the early pioneers families including his own, which include the Rinehart, Paul, English families. The book is not indexed and so finding tidbits is slow process. I would be happy to try looking up information. I also have an old family scrapbook with some of the family clippings related to Covello
